Question New Tires and your thoughts

I have been driving on my Michelin PS2's for about 36k miles now. I still have (believe it or not) at least 10k more out of them. Well, I wanted to start looking for tires right now in order to get a great deal. I have a friend that works at Discount Tire. He could get me the same tires with the insurance for around $1,000. Not too bad I would think. I was also looking at other brands, but love these tires so much!

So I went to ebay yesterday just to look. I found a set (yes 18 and 19's) that was brand new with the stickers on all of them. The seller stated they were all new and had pictures. I bought them for $730 ($80 shipping). I think this was a pretty good deal. I can then have my friend put them on at a minimal cost to me.

Do you think this was a good deal? Your thoughts.

I think it is, you're still going to have to pay a little bit to get the tired balanced and mounted but it won't be near $200. Plus you saved on sales tax (pretty much your cost of shipping). I'd say you saved about $150.

What brand are the tires you got off eBay?

^ for the profile and size of our tires, it very much can be near $200 bux to mount and balance... they hate doing oversized low profiles...

3 hours for mounting and balancing?? (taking that they have a standard per hour charge around $60 which is typical for most shops). I could see close to $100 but if it is closer to $200 then you're better off getting it included within the price if you buy it from a tire place. I can't imagine mounting and balancing tires can take more than 2 hours if you have the right equipment.

Does anyone really know because tires are generally cheaper off the net and this would be some useful information if it's worth to get them at a shop.

Well, this isn't a bad thing. Like I said, I have a friend that works at Discount Tire and can do it for cheap. Not really sure how cheap, but it shouldn't be that much.

They are Michelin PS2's 18's and 19's.

Bought my 4 tires from Tirerack. Had them balanced and mounted at a local tire store that specializes in MBZ for $60 out the door. Did a search online too and cheapest i've seen was $15 per tire.

It's a shop that HDDP referred me to called Ron's Tires and Wheels.

You can go to Tirerack's site and put in your zip code and it'll show you local installers and cost per tire.

I would have got them from my friend at Discount tire. They offered a very good price and it included insurance. Did the tires from eBay come with insurance. Also, if you should need to take advantage of replacement under warranty, Discount will take care of it. Will you have to send them back to the eBay guy?

My experience with Discount tire is they fixed flats for free as well. I will buy inexpensive accessories from eBay but would much rather deal with a local source. Overall it appears that you didn't save a lot (it will depend on what you are charged for the mounting and balancing).
