Rubber bumper on rear firewall where console lid hits...
Little bit of FYI if you didn't know, and a question regarding model/model year specific features.
I had an '04 Limited, and everytime I opened the center console, the lid hit the rear firewall and sooner or later it would've scratched the console lid.
When I got my '05 SRT, there was a little rubber bumper/silencer attached to the rear firewall right where the console lid hits. Apparently, Chrysler got smart and instead of replacing console lids, they installed a bumper to prevent the damage.
My question is this - do ALL of the 05+ cars have this, or is it SRT specific?
To those of you with '04 model cars that don't have a bumper - I'm not sure if Chrysler sells the part, but it may be worth looking into. It is a tiny little rubber bumper about the size of a pencil eraser, but not quite as tall. Can't be expensive, or difficult to replicate. Every time I used to accidentally let the console lid go on my '04 I just cringed when I heard it hit the rear firewall...and thinking of the scratch I just KNEW it would get.
Thought I'd ask - just curious.

As soon as I purchased my '04 XF coupe I realized this problem of the center console lid hitting the rear firewall. The sound of it hitting was what bothered me along with the marks that would result from this happening over and over. I had some small ( a little larger than a pencil eraser) black foam rubber bumpers that I think came from some electronic equipment (provided so it would scratch furniture?). Anyway, I peeled off the paper backing and stuck it on right where the lid hit the rear wall. You can probably pick up a pack of these at a hardware, Radio Shack or drug store for about a buck.
I have an '04 Coupe and I've noticed exactly the same thing. It's nature to just open it up and let it go, I did it the first day I had it and I cringed when I heard it hit the firewall! Ever since then I'm just careful when I open it but like someone suggested above I was considering putting one of those little rubber bumpers up there, 3M makes some too that like he said goes on electronics but I haven't had an opportunity to pick them up yet.
My 2005 roadster - build number 59193 - has the little rubber bumper. Didn't realize that I had one until tonight. It's covered up by the maps in my map pocket.

I have an 05 coupe and it has the rubber bumper. Now if there was a way to stop the shifter, from hitting the console when shifting into second, that would be great.
I've a 04, it doesn't have the rubber originally, so it BANG loud every time I open it. It doesn't make sense to me at all, and I glue a small piece of bumper myself to protect it.

let's just say that my finger is bigger than the opening that is there. And my 05 doesn't have a rubber stop and it is a Base model so I don't even have a map pocket to keep my owners manual in. I do have the all important umbrella hooks though so I could hang some hats there
06 Limited Roadster- does have the bumper so this is not SRT-specific. And like the earlier post, I reinstalled it on my Windrestrictor.
Also- having learned my lesson years ago about the wear on a console top caused by regularly resting your right arm on it, especially in top-down summer, I keep a small soft cloth behind the passenger seat to pull out as a protective "cushion" when needed.

I have had and 04 since April of 04 and never realized that the center cover would hit the bulkhead. So after reading this thread I went out and looked, what I discovered was the reason mine console doesn't hit the bulkhead is because I keep a CD case in the map pocket. I can definitely see that if there is nothing in the map pocket the console will hit, the bumper is definitely a good idea. By the way umbrella clips do work well for holding my Crossfire hat too.
That little rubber bumper on the rear wall does not prevent damage to
the console lid. I have the bumper, and I also have wear spot (paint
failing, small pit in paint) where the lid has struck the bumper. I, too,
have become careful when opening the console. I believe that a softer
rubber compound would have been a better choice.
