Spontaneous windshield crack questions
As I was driving up for the Holidays with the temperatures changing overnight from 70 to 40s, I noticed that there was now a 3 inch crack going right from the left edge and then another 3 inches down. I do not recall any collisions that could have caused the crack.
I'm now wondering how that happened, and have two ideas. One, there was a microcrack that was exacerbated by the drop in temperature, or two there was a manufacturing defect. (But good luck proving the latter though) Has anyone faced anything similar? Also, since my xfire is on lease, I'll probably have to replace the windshield now. How much do these cost to replace?
Thanks.

Good morning,
As luck would have it I had to replace mine about a week ago. I was taking off from a light and noticed a small crack that reflected the light. It wasn't there when I left work. Left side top, about 2 inches down then a 90 degree right. It grew to about 9 inches over night in the garage. I called my local glass company and they had the windshield in stock. Lucky for me zero deduct in Florida. The installer said it would have cost me about $475 without insurance. Funny thing was after mine he was heading to the MB dealership to replace another one. HMMMM.

Coupegirl,
I do love Florida.
You aren't too far away... Sorrry but I didn't take any pics. A new digital camera is on the Christmas list... LOL.

Look on the TSB section and you will see this one 21-Oct-06 - 23-047-06 - Body - Windshield Crack Diagnosis. It may have been under warranty through a TSB, even though you have a $0 ded to get it replaced, your premium will go up if you have more than 1 in a year.

How did it happen? A rock might have knicked it and when the temps change a little knick can spread, I've even seen them shatter in the heat. You can try the dealer if you are convinced its a defect and your car is still under warranty. If you have glass coverage on your auto insurance policy it should be covered if a rock, debris or "I don't know what hit it" is the case. It should not go against you and your rates should not suffer. Check with your agent first.

As a partiallly satisfactory update, I checked online with GEICO who has my comprehensive policy, and they said that if the crack is less than 6 inches, they'll send someone over to repair it and no deductible will apply. If larger than 6 in., they'll replace the winsdhield, but deducitlbe applies ...It seems like they did a good job, you have to look closely to see the crack. Guy came next day at my work, to make it easy. He says crack might have been due to a small object that hit side of windshield, but more likely was caused by windshield 'bending' naturally.
right after i bought my '05 xfire in july i got a crack about 12 inches long from the drivers side.it does not look like it was hit by anything. i still have not replaced it yet.
Get them to the dealer and make them change it, that way it makes it easier for us when it happens. One thing I know since joining this forum is that sooner or later things break that someone here has already had fixed. All we can do is continue the communication to make it easier for all.
