Default What S R T stands for

On this mornings ESPN Car Auction there was a guest Chrysler engineer on for a small stint during the show. The announcer asked that he always wondered what the SRT meant on the early muscle car era since this engineer was there during this dawn or cars.

He said it stood for STREET RACING TECHNOLOGY. If anyone also watched this prog. die I hear it correctly, or in today's Chrysler market does the SRT mean something else?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but being a teenager during the "Dawn of the early Muscle Car Era" I don't remember any SRT logo's.
I do remember when the 1967 Dodge "R/T's" came out as a counter part to the Plymouth GTX. And I do believe it stood for Road & Track.
If that Chrysler engineer was truly old enough to have been around for the
dawn of cars" then he was probably old enough to be allowed to forget something.

Ditto.
Remember when " SS ", on a Chevrolet, really meant something.

SRT was originally Street Racing Technology in some advertisements when the SRT-4 was being developed but wow did that change quickly to Street and Racing Technology when the lawyers went through it ... explanations followed in other articles on how it was for liability reasons being changed to AND ...

no big deal ... whats in a name ? 93 octane by any other name would smell just as sweet...

Lee, thats a "Doubled edged sword" so to speak. Because I can remember it being possible to get the "SS" badge on a 1963 Impala with a 6 cyl.
I never saw one, but I read where it was possible to order.

I did see the same auction show you saw and I did hear the SRT guy. It does stand for Street and Racing Technology.

SRT traces it's roots back to the orginal group working on the Viper - they were known as "Team Viper". When the Plymouth Prowler was in the works that group was known internally as "Team Prowler". Since Chrysler could see the writing on the wall - not much sense in naming all these different groups differently - they put everything together as SVE (Specialty Vehicle Engineering). This was later changed to PVO (Performance Vehicle Operations) and ultimately to SRT (Street and Racing Technology). The "official" reason given for the name change to SRT was because that's the name given to all vehicles produced by this group - but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they really decided this was just too darn similar to Ford's SVO (Specialty Vehicle Operations) moniker.

Oh, and I actually have a PVO hat. That name first came to real prominence while the SRT-4 was in the works for Dodge, but that's also around the time of the switch to SRT.
