Is It Against The Law To Shoot Door Dingers?
I have stored my car all winter and have started taking it to work now that the snow banks are melting. I always park as far out as I can but this is a VA hospital so by the end of most days, all the lots are full, Anyway, I came out of work the other day and a HUGE ding/scrape/dent was in my passenger door!! No one was around and all the spaces next to me were empty so there were no witnesses. It looks like I am out of $1000 to get my door fixed.
How can I protect my car in these lots?

Sorry to hear that someone carelessly messed up your car. I hope whoever did it understands how wrong it is to "hit and run"... I hope you get your car repaired good as new.
I recommend investing $1000-$1500 in a commuting beater that people wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole, let alone the edge of their door.
Old Honda Civics and Accords, Toyota Corollas and Camrys, etc.

Oh, and yes, to answer your question, it is against the law to shoot door dingers.
But I don't think it's against the law to put voodoo curses on them. Keep an eye out for who might park in the car lot around that spot, you might find a car with your paint all over it. Then it's time to pull out the "pins and needles", figuratively speaking!

One of my greatest fears. So far, knock on wood, I've not had anyone bang
into my car with their door. You are doing what you can, if you don't have
alternate transportation. However, as you've learned, sometimes it is not
enough. Since you work at the VA, aren't there security cameras on the
parking lots? Check with security and see if they can help. Maybe they have
a pic of the offender.
Good Luck!

I don't know how bad your dent is, but you should have one of he 'paintless dent' repair services have a look at it? They do amazing work removing dents. However, if it is badly scratched, that is another issue. Maybe the dent can be fixed and then a little touch-up or buffing on the paint would work? I had a pretty bad ding removed for $60. It is impossible to see where the ding was now!

I would like to answer with a big NOPE !! fire away only I can't so here is a great idea from another forum member patpur and a link to his pictures,
Two pool noodles secured by a decorative rope purchased at Home Depot. To the loop on each end attached elastic tie down hooks also from HD. The noodles are covered by 100% cotton terry so you don't see the noodles. The hooks attach to your wheel wells. If you are interested I can e-mail pics, forum is not letting me attach the pics.

Let me know if you need a detailed description how to make them and where to get the stuff. It takes about 1/2 hr to make one but they do work. I have had no dings in over a year and I park normally.

No it is not against the law to shoot them, however it is against the law to kill them, the idea is inflect as much pain as possible, shooting them in "Joints" elbows, knees, is one of the best places.

Murder most foul would be the preferred method but I'd suggest a paintball gun. While not actually eliminating one more careless, non-thinking human (who has possibly already reproduced) from the face of the Earth, it does provide a sense of satisfaction especially if the offender is still available. Nothing like paintballing some 'wads windshield.
Seriously though, I like Sonoronos idea: keep an eye open for any vehicle doors w/ your paint on them. It's going to cost you serious dollars, it's worth the effort especially if the lot you park in is 'employees only'.
Sorry to hear about the damage, Cross!
