Default FACT: You can't make more power with an aftermarket muffler...

Because the stock muffler is sooo efficient, and flows sooo much air...

Having some knowledge of hydraulics every bend reduces flow, maybe a little but straight thru means unrestricted flow

LMFAO.......that looks like a Johnny Carson map! (for those that remember Art Fern here's a video to bring back memories. the 5:15 mark is the map portion! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HXkfDeR9Nw)

Even if there's no HP improvement, I just got my Magnaflow cat-back on a couple hours ago.........I LOVE that sound!

I was wondering what the inside of the OEM muffler looked like. Damn, that looks like a mess! Thanks for the pics!

That was so cool to do. Im proud of you for that! This has got to be the coolest group I've ever been a part of!!
Although I have heard that the smaller engines need a little back pressure to balance things. thats why you see small pipes on smaller engines. What if you could open up the original box and insert fiber glass somehow that was straight thru, and close it up after on the top side and it would look stock? Just my dos cervecas and dos margaritas and and dos cervesas and dinner opinion.......

or put a straight through muffler on, cut off your origional tips, and weld them onto the new muffler.....because thats what I did.

Thats great Im interested in some sound too just not sure yet how I wanna do it. I work as a tool maker and wonder if there are alternative ways to make that popping sound of glass packed flow thru types. and maybe use the oem stuff. no insult intended all Iv'e done is upgrade my brakes. . . . . so far.

I'm curious about something. Does lower backpressure affect the boost level of the supercharger in the SRT6s?

Where are you MMZ_Timelord? This may be a good one for you.

The less backpressure, the easier it is for your car to boost.

If a SRT owner wants to send me their muffler, i can do the same thing. :-)

I like the stock exhaust on the Crossfires because it makes the car a silent killer............nobody sees it coming until it's too late. My Charger is running open exhaust which you can hear from a mile away(and it sounds great) but it makes people back down real quick when I revv the engine.

well, Im not exactly an expert on this, but I have had alot of experience working on turbo cars, and from past experience, it really depends on how much boost you are running. The more boost, the larger diameter pipe you need to run, thus, allowing better flow to the turbo. Since boost is basically forcing air in and out of your engine. The biggest restriction on XF's is probably the cats, since there are like 3 sets of them. But since you can't remove those due to emissions and OBD2, your only real choice to open up your exhaust flow would be the muffler, and I can tell you right now by looking at the factory one, its a piece of junk, its heavy, the exhaust flows into, out of, and then back into, and finally out of the muffler. I installed a custom exhaust on my XF, I had my best friends dads drag race team install a 8 Inch (in length) 3 Inch Inlet Single chamber to a dual 2.5 inch outlet drag muffler, and I could tell a huge difference. Especially in throttle response. I even ran it with straight pipes for a while, without a muffler, and it really opened it up, but the neighbors didnt like it to much. But, everyone has their own opinion about sound, performance, etc.

With a muffler like the stock one on the xf, you create a bottle neck effect, causing back pressure, which in some cases is ok, (small displacement engines), but the xf 3.2 is a fairly decent displacement engine.

And the less bends you have the better. Take your car to a shop that has a mandrel pipe machine, rare usually, but makes for a much cleaner free flowing exhaust.

These are just my 2 cents. I wish there was a decent set of headers for the xf that didnt cost so dang much.

Does anyone know how interchangeable the Mercedes parts are with the xfs as far as engine goes. manifold etc?

I agree with you that you can find many better mufflers and take them to a shop with a mandrel bending machine as that is what I did to great effect!!

we all know that the cats ccause the main restriction for our cars but i wonder how much emissions would be effected if we removed the back two as there are only sensors on the front two.

what we need is for someone who has done this to get an emission reading. i think that the uk community would get away with this mod as our emission laws aren't as tough as some of the states in the us.
Already im sure my car pulls better now i have the straight through pipe, and im a believer that if you own a sports car it should sound like a sports car.
For those who haven't heard the mercedes v6 can sing such a beautifull tune so why hide it??

Steve

Ok guys,...ther are only 1 set of cats on our car. One just after the exhaust manifold on bank one, and one after the exhaust manifold on bank two. After that there are a set of resonators, basically a unrestricted muffler, that helps get rid of droaning, and then the muffler.

The SRT's have 4 cats total. 2 just after the manifolds & 2 more before the Y-pipe.

DESCRIPTION - SRT

A thin-wall air-gap insulated exhaust pipe leads to the three-way catalytic converter, which has an air-gap insulated housing. The air-gap insulation, whereby a steel shell is wrapped around the component, limits heat loss to hasten the catalytic converter action. The insulation also minimizes the need for insulation to protect the passenger compartment from excessive temperatures.

First set cats, second set resonators

Sorry. Those are all CATS. The resonator is a BIG, 20#, squarish thing that is located behind the H crossover after that last bend in your picture. I know cause mine is sitting on the garage floor since I had it removed. The car sounds MUCH better without being obnoxious.
