Question Can not shift, clutch out?

In the middle of driving, I couldn't shift my 6 speed and had to pull into a gas station to park. Once turned off, I could put feels the gears, but once turned on, I couldn't and the clutch pedal itself is very difficult to press down. What guesses are there that either the gearbox if busted, the clutch needs replaced or a new tranny is needed... or it's low on clutch fluid?

THANK!!!!!
Crossfire Limited, Sapphire Silver, 58K miles. This is the first big problem I've had with it.

You are on track,

Could be slave cylinder problem, low fluid, or leak.

Maybe linkage

or pressure plate.

Have driven many standards over the years, and your problem does not sound like a transmission problem. A broken tranny or synchros would have been grinding and causing noticeable problems for a while.

It sounds like something in the clutch mechanism failed. I'm not familiar enough to say this car has a hydraulic clutch, but if it's out of fluid, it won't move the pressure plate off the flywheel. Or it could be the throw-out bearing. Or it could be a mechanical or material failure in the linkage.

If the clutch pedal is difficult to depress, it doesn't sound like a leaking slave or low fluid problem.

Hey tpulling, I know this is an old thread, but I am having the exact issue. I have logically concluded it is the clutch pressure plate and disc. I don't believe it is the hydraulic system (ie. master and slave master cylinder). As it's been a while since you posted about this, I figure you already resolved it and I just wanted to confirm if I am on the right track or not?

Sorry to everyone on this thread. I had to wait and wait to hear different stories from two different mechanics. What it turned out to be was a bad engine mount. Crossfires have three, I was told two. They HAVE THREE. I had on bad mount replaced and everything is fine now. Please please please check the mounts. I had about 73,000 miles on mine before the mount broke, and also about 63K when the clutch was replaced. Keep us all up to date with what happens in your case. THANKS!

Thanx for the quick reply Tpulling! That is the strangest fix, considering the original symptoms!

By 3 mounts, it sounds as if you are referring to the two motor mounts that go on the left and right side, as well as the center transmission mount?

I would prefer to change the mounts, as it's easier than changing the clutch system, but it still boggles me how this would keep you from changing the gears due to a very stiff clutch pedal?

I started a new post for mine: Can't shift gears while driving anymore?

Well the clutch wasn't as stiff as it was just rough feeling. The feedback in my foot from the pedal made it feel like the transmission was about the blow up. The mechanic asked me if I ever felt the engine lift up, and I did but I thought that was from too little tranny fluid. I had wear marks on under my hood from the engine rubbing. So that is probably why the pedal felt rough - my engine was moving all together. It's very disturbing thinking about it now that she works just fine, but I had to drive her like a grandma during that loose mount. So much so I was afraid if I could get out of 1,2 gears, I was all right since the feedback smoothed out in 3rd - but that's never a good thing. Sorry for the confusion - it's a first for me too.

Thanks for clarifying.

Mine does sound slightly different. I can't push the pedal down at all. I feel the actual pedal flexing when I push, but I can tell nothing is happening with the actual throwout bearing and pressure plate.

It just happened suddenly in my case. Before that, she was driving nice and smooth and I could floor it too without any problems. I have had loose motor mount problems with other cars, so I didnt observe those symptoms with my XF before this happened.

Well, at least now, I feel confident we do have two different problems.

Thanks again for the update!

u say u can put it in gear and drive it but can't shift,,then the clutch and PP is ok your problem is in the shifter ,,slave,,cable,,fluid. have u tried to shift with the rpm of the engine,,, over my 397 AMX's that i have owned i have bought over 50 of them with clutch problems,, put it in 1 gear start the motor go to about 23to2500 rpm as u ease off the gas pull it out of 1 and then (between gears) give it a little gas as u push it into 2 gear,,,takes practice ,, i use to do it a lot so go for it if that works your clutch and PP are good. jim
