Default Problems with the Key

Ok, here's the story. Before I got my xfire, the car hopped between a few dealers and the second key was misplaced. So, they ordered me another. I've gone through 3 replacement keys so far - and always the same problem. The key works, turns on the car, unlocks the doors manually, etc. But, the keyless entry doesn't work.

My dealer is at a loss. After the second key came in he made some calls and aparently I'm not the only one with this issue - one person solved the problem by turning the engine over three times, then leaving the engine running for 5 mins. Sounds complicated to me, but didn't work in my case. He's taking the car all day Thursday to try his hardest to solve the problem. Anybody had this problem - any tips I can try or pass on? At this point I'll try anything.

Have they tried putting new batteries in the key before you use it?

Yeah, tried that. Also, each new key I've gotten has been new - because I still have all the old ones.

My PT Cruiser has a problem similar to that. Sometimes the keyless entry works, other times it doesn't. I'm not sure what causes it.

I had the exact same problem. The dealer had to order a new replacement key. When they gave me the the key, it would only work to start the car...no door locks :? . I had to put the car in the service department for them to code the key to the car. When it came out....everthing worked.

Oh, good. Hopefully the dealer will be able to resolve this problem tomorrow then - I'll keep you posted.

Yes, the dealer should be able to handle it. when i got a new key for my 2000 Mustang it took about 5 very specific steps to program the key to the car and it also took the 2 original keys to convince the car or the keys that this was a good thing. Personally i would be happy it is diffacult to near impossable to make a new key work (harder to steal )

FIXED!!!!

Here's the trick, in case anyone else runs into this issue.
Cycle the ignition on/off 3 times.
Leave it on the third time for at least 5 minutes - with the engine not running.

That will do it - why couldn't mercedes just say that the first three times?

:P

Thanks for the tip. I will give it a try. I about gave up on having a spare key which was fully functional. The dealer has been clueless on this. Thanks, and hope this works.

If that doesn't work:

put your right foot in
put your right foot out
put your right foot in and shake it all about

My wifes M-Class has this key problem with the second key. I will have her try this fix, as the one in the owners manual (witch is quite different) did not work. Will let you know if this works for us. We don't have the Mercedes dealer nearby. So far, we have had NO Crossfire problems at all! Love it!

There is a TSB for replacement keys. The key must be special ordered and usually shipped next day air.The remote part of the key is programmed for your car by chrysler. To activate the remote you must start the car 1 to 5 times.
