Broken Steering Gear Or BIG RIPOFF ??
I just got back from the fabulou$ Chrysler dealer. Haveing my 4 wheel aligment done. I noticed the right front tire had bad inside wear. and I did have a little right pull. Well after a few hours he comes and gives me the bad new$. I have a broken steer gear and for $3400.00 he will make it brand new. He says (COMMON PROBLEM ON CROSSFIRES) I only have 29000 miles on my 05 coupe. Well after I asked if he was crazy he replied for $100.00 he could tweek the tie rods to compensate for the broke gear. I told him I would get back to him. Has anyone else had or heard of this (Common Problem)?
Do a search on "Steering Damper" and see if that doesn't describe your problem to a tee...
I agree with the others, he's trying to hook ya.

I would be suspicious of anyone that wants to charge $3K+ to fix something I can't see or ever heard of
Relax and get a drink. You have no problem other than a simple alignment.
ask him to write it up with the estimate, describing the problem to a T. Then go to a reputable shop and get the alignment done, and probably the damper too, and then call your local TV investigative reporter. What a crock this is. Broken steering gear, and common to Crossfire's????? WTF????? All these Crosses on here and not one broken steering gear, except yours??????
This guy sounds like a thief ,take it to a reputable aligment shop get aligned and buy a 20.00 steering damper (install your self ) and enjoy your ride ............ these jerks are comming out of the woodwork trying to burn people. AND John where are the pics of your ride ,you gonna make me drive to middle Tn. just to see.?

He probably has a steering gear on the parts shelve he's attempting to unload. I would be very skeptical that a steering gear broke unless the car was in one helluva front end collision ! That's the only time I've ever heard of a steering gear breaking !!! RIPOFF ALERT !!!

As soon as the weather plays nice for a few days, I'll make it happen
A steering gear ??? a bad rack maybe, but as everyone states they have not heard of any problems with the rack and pinion as of yet, but yes I would have them give you a full detailed explantion of what , and why they think the rack is bad, and 3k to replace it does sound a lot, but I'm sure the rack itself is not cheap, keep us updated, good luck !!!

Sounds to me like the dealer is right. The steering gear on Rkiser's Xfire does not work.
The rack and pinion on our crossfires does not work and that is a common problem with Crossfires.
Putting a rack and pinion assy in for $ 3,000 doesn't sound so bad given the conversion work involved.
Insist that he does just that but be sure he guarantees his work.

If its not pulling one way or the other or the steering wheel is turning 1/2 turn with the wheels doing nothing then your car is fine. Get it checked somewhere else.
