Checked with the body shop we have used for years about who they contract out to do their wheel repair (curb rash, peeling etc.) All four of my rims need some help (rears are very minor, fronts are a bit worse). Contacted they guy who does the work from a tow behind trailer over the phone. I looked them up in the Better business bureau and they have great ratings. I was quoted a price of $150 a wheel...with no estimates given. flat rate. I have NO experience with wheel repair rates but this seems a bit high, especially when I dont see how there can be a flat rate when a 14" Honda rim is going to take a bit less time that a 19" rear rim on our vehicles and the fact that the damage is fairly minor. (nothing noticeable to anyone except the obsessive...like us) I kind of assumed that the $ would depend on the size of the job.

Anyone have any experience with shops and their rates? I know there a DIY kits available, but I truly do not have the time with my job and finals @ the university to dedicate to this right now. Any help would be great.

I've seen quotes from the best of the best here in the U.K ranging from £50 up to £90 per wheel. I'd say that, stateside; it should be around $60 up to around $100. So $150 does seem high.

 

Agree, $150 is high, but it depends on the damage. I was told about $350 total and that included a "lipstick" paint to cover the repair even better. That was on my SRT type rims to which one has a nasty dent/blemish.

 

BTW, these prices I was quoted were for full refurb... not a touch-up job. So that included full strip via acid-bath (as opposed to sand blasting which leaves the surface pitted... apparently) and repaint. You could choose another colour / finiosh but that would up the price.

I have had curb rash repaired on one wheel, tig welded over the curb rash, then turned down to original form, complete wheel repainted. Tire balanced. $85.

One wheel bent and curb rash, straightened, repaired and wheel repainted, tire balanced. $85.

One wheel bent only, straightened. Tire balanced. $85.

Perfect job everytime. If he can't do a perfect job, he will not do it.

Phoenix area. Paid $75 for curb rash repair. Looks good but not perfect but then again put some wax on them and you hardly notice the difference. I bought 3 perfect ones off the internet over the last 2 years. Total price was $386. I keep my spare tires on these.

 

I am considering just waiting and buying 2 used rims off the forum marketplace...I havent looked to see what is avail. yet though. For now, I have just painted over the worst areas w/ silver touch-up paint from volvo (which BTW is a near perfect match) but the roughness is obviously still there. Have you checked out Ye Old Wheel Works? They are in Elkton on RT 1. I hear nothing but good things about them.

62thunderbird- Thanks for the links. Wheelsandcaps.com seems very reasonable, esp. considering all I need is the wheel. Center caps are fine. My only question is if the rims are OEM or are the remanufactured?

Pat- I called ye olde and they told me they could do it... but if I dropped off the rims, they told me they "would hope to get to them in 3 weeks". yikes. Considering both fronts are going to cost almost the same as a new rim, I may just go that road when my "spending money" allows..........and as I'm writing this my mom has just informed me that she curbed the wheel on my S40 today in Baltimore. GOD HELP ME!!!! As Kramer would say..serenity now, serenity now...

When I was selling cars wholesale, I paid $75 to $80 per wheel just to refinish---more to straighten if they were out of round. This guy is full retail; he will due it for less if he wants the job. Good luck.

 

A dealer friend of mine told me he could get my 19" repaired (it has about 3" of curb rash) for $100, but he sold the dealership before I could act. Somewhere on this forum is a "how to" for DIY. I am contemplating making the attempt since I have 5 rims on two cars that need a little work. Of course, if I could negotiate a package deal for $400-500 I would probably just write a check. Does anyone know about a good "wheel doctor" in the southwest MI area?
