Default Good Sat Nav Option

Yes, like most of you I think the lack of sat nav on the crossfire sucks - so here's a nice little number from Pioneer - it may not be silver but it looks superb - check out the link http://www.avic-n1.com/

i'm in the middle...well, maybe the beginning-middle, of my private pilots training so i've been lookin at handheld gps units. the plan is to just switch memory chips from air to ground. anyone know of a good one???

i don't really like the idea of cluttering up the cockpit of the crossfire unless i really need the help and, for a while at least, i'll be using rental planes.

Hey Cooker,
If the sat nav on the 05 model is from Becker (same supplier as current radio) then it's got a titchy screen - 2 colour only with arrows and voice. That's it.

LordPercy,
Checked out your site - cool.
Do you know of a sat nav system for the Crossfire that would work for Europe ? I live in POrtugal. If I do opt for the Crossfire (as soon as I get my test drive - promised since beginning of Jan') perhaps we could do a deal.

tom tom and destinator both cover all of europe as do most of the software based pda systems, you juts load the maps you need, you may want a bigger memory card to hold more maps if your drive around europe a lot. But they are dropping in price like a stone!

Houstondan i don't review aviation products "not skilled in that way" but these guys do http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/menu_aviation.php if you took a pda software option you could run a programme for each need

Thanks for the info. I see you have installed to the right on the dash. It looks like you have a road angel (or something similar) is installation simple?
Of pda not road angel.

I was going to go for the blue tooth but, would take your advice on what is better, cable or wireless?

its about the only place to put it in the xfire, install is ok but running the cables is a little tricky.

As for bluetooth it saves on some cables but you have to change the batteries in the BT reciever every 12hrs of use so not very pratical, if you choose to power the BT then you have as many cables as the non BT version plus its ’100 cheaper too!

Cabled verison for me, Tom Tom is excellent, you should be aware that Tom Tom 3 is due fairly soon, awaiting a review copy @ lordpercy.com not sure on their policy for upgrade if you only recently purcahsed version 2.

Oh thats a Bel550 euro radar detactor, that plus trafcam running alongside tomtom keeps the license clean

I use my Dell Axim and a GPS Compact Flash ($99) with Mapololis--great set-up. I travel everyweek to a different city, so this is the ultimate set-up (and portable!)

I bought a Garmin iQue 3600 handheldp GPS/PDA and mounted it in the Crossfire using the cellphone mounting bracket. It works great! If anyone is interested, I will take some pictures and post them.

sorry if this sounds stupid but does that have both avaition and ground mapping available?? is the gps/antenna a separate plug-in unit? work in the bird? power? on a rental plane i don't know what the chances are of getting a power plug.

Dan:

The unit does work while in the air (www.anywheremap.com - about $300 ). The GPS plugs in the top CompactFlash slot and you're off and running. My GPS compactflash also came with an external antenna, but I have not ever used it. I also have a suction mount that holds the unit and has a flexible arm that you can bend anyway. Really cool set-up vs the Garmin or something expensive like that. As far as the Amix battery it can go for about 6 hours in constant use (I have an extended life battery).

I've got SMARTNAV. It's just one button and when pressed connects me to a real person at smartnav HQ where they ask me where I want to go and send the route to my car. Then a voice guides me to my destination. I can also ask for nearest Petrol, Cash Machines , Hotels etc.

The unit also bleeps when I get near speed cameras and if the car is stolen it can be tracked.

All this from one Button.
