OK, I have posted some pictures of the Garmin iQue 3500 Sat Nav I have installed in my car. The cell phone mount holds the unit. The power and speaker are in the lighter.

The pictures do not do the unit justice. If you want to get all the specs, here is the link:

www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600

An external antenna is available, but I have not needed it. The internal antenna works just fine. I usually get a good signal from at least 4 satellites.

I am really happy with it.

I've just bought an XDA II and plan to run the TomTom 2 (get a free
upgrade to 3 with the deal!) at ’269 ex vat

I was going the bluetooth road until I read Lord Percy's comments.
Does that mean you can't use yours away from the car now as I may
wish to 'roam' with mine?

The iQue3600 pops right out of the holder and the internal battery will work for a few hours in sat nav mode.

Glad to have been of help, if you want to roam you'd be better off with a product that has a jacket, like the older co pilot or navman stuff but the software isn't close to TomTom.

The bluetooth tomtom offer may be the only way to roam with it but i doubt you'd really find it useful while walking its just not designed for that, you'd want a real GPS walkers system.

A Navman jacket would let you run other software more suited to on foot naviagtion depends on your needs.

Where did you get the deal in the end, not that i'm after the click thru on Amazon....lol

I have an IPAQ with the NavMan and TOM TOM 3 with a 512MB Compact Flash memory card to hold the maps. I'm hoping to fit this into my Xfire when I pick it up on Saturday.

I've been looking for mounting brackets and all I've found so far is this:

http://www.dashmount.co.uk/march04/71100.htm or
http://www.dashmount.co.uk/jan04/71118.htm

I'm already using the first one for a mobile phone hands free kit which I had someone install in the car at the dealers last Friday. Does anyone know of something else for my IPAQ then?

Thanks.

Default Pioneer AVIC-N1

I had the Pioneer unit installed in my Crossfire 2 days after I purchased the car

Excellent unit

AM/FM/CD/MP3/DVD/Voice Activated or Touch Screen NAV / Back Up Camera / Detachable front face, all in a single din size head unit

It installed in less than 2 hours

Sounds great with the stock speaker system

Kinda Pricey ($2100 with all features)

Took a while to learn MOST of the features

Great unit so far

Good luck

Hi HoustonDan,

I am using AnywhereMap on a Toshiba 740E in flying and either MS2004 Street and DeLorme MapnGo on the road.
The GPS clicks in to the CompactFlash card slot, so I have a 256Mb mini card for the additional storage space required. The whole setup isn't exactly cheap but works really well in the air and on the ground.

But until you have your PPL remain clear of the GPS, since you'll get too spoiled by it :-)

appreciate the help. did first solo last week so i'm just now starting real work on navigation and cross-country. got a lowrance street unit for 150$ and, although i still need to be able to navigate, it's a very comforting backup.

Especially with all the TFRs and such. The Anywhere program is easily updated as many as four times a day.
And it's very nice to know for sure that you are not within a SUA, MOA or too close to a TFR with just one look. That way you can concentrate on the important things such as keeping your scan and look for other traffic. If you want to take a closer look they are at
http://www.anywheremap.com/
Since I already had a PDA to keep my failing memory banks in line I just got the software and GPS from them.
The Driving software was $30 or so.

If you run into a snag in your training or something of the sort feel free to drop me a line :-)
