I am using AnywhereMap on a Toshiba 740E in flying and either MS2004 Street and DeLorme MapnGo on the road.
The GPS clicks in to the CompactFlash card slot, so I have a 256Mb mini card for the additional storage space required. The whole setup isn't exactly cheap but works really well in the air and on the ground.

But until you have your PPL remain clear of the GPS, since you'll get too spoiled by it :-)
