Please help me remove alternator/generator I'm such a novice
 

Guys im trying to remove my alternator, I've had a good look around the forum, Im following this guide on page 27-28

Basically so far I have loosened bolt 2 on the picture and It's not completely off, just sticking out, not sure if i need to remove it completely?

Basically i'm struggling to figure out how to remove the accessory belt? Is it just brute force? as I've yanked it really hard a few times and it doesn't seem to be able to move at all....

I assume once I get the belt off I will then be able to wiggle the generator about and disconnect/remove it?

Please help, I know nothing about cars, Just trying to save on garage bills....

I have a new alternator coming as this one has failed according to the garage...

I also need to replace a fuse as it's currently not cranking, its just clicking... but I guess I'll come to that later

To remove the belt you have to lock the belt tensioner and your pdf says see page 7-45.
You must not remove the alternator with the belt under spring pressure.:( That's dangerous.

Guys... think I've been loosening the wrong bolt lol...

Please see these pictures... basically i've been loosening the bolt with the wrench on it anti clockwise...

After seeing another post on the forum, I'm led to beleive that I should of actually been loosening the nut with the red circle... is that right?

Actually comparing it to the picture on the left, the bolt would be somewhere around where the black arrow is pointing, is that correct?

sorry to tell you.... but your on the WRONG side of the engine.... the alternator is on the passenger side..
PLEASE tighten any bolts you have loosened back to spec...

Go here and download the 2004 Crossfire Service Manual..

then go to Section 7, Cooling, page 7-42... this will show you the drawing of how the belt wraps and which pulley is which.... note #7 (tensioner) and #5 (alternator/generator)..... read down a couple of pages and it will show you how to take the fan belt off..... then use your pdf file to remove the correct bolts on the alternator and disconnect the wiring....

thanks, yes i think i was loosening the power steering pump, i see now that the tensioner is next to it, I think i'll have to take the fan out as I really can't see what i should be doing...

You do not undo the nut it is a dummy, it is used as a leverage point.

thanks chaps, I'm going to have a try today, so by just turning that nut a few times, it should make the belt more slack?

Removed the fan, and can now see the nut, but i've got nothing that fits it... got loads of socket sets but nothing that will fit the nut without rounding if off... does anyone know what tool I should buy?

most likley its a torx bit needed to loosen the tensioner. it works as a fulcrum and wont loosen the nut itself. when counter clockwise tension is applied the whole pulley moves and provides enough slack to slip the belt off. then slowly let the pulley move clockwise until it rests or you will find your arm stuck at the bottom of the engine bay!!

First I will give you credit for trying. But trying to remove an alternator without knowing what it even looks like is a clue you may need some help.

To loosen the tensioner, you need a 17mm deep socket on the 3/8" ratchet. The longer the ratchet, the better leverage. See pic. Using the casted bolt (seen in the mirror), twist the tensioner to release the belt. Once the belt is off, then you can remove the two alternator mounting bolts. I assume there are only 2, that is all I see looking at my car. Good luck. James

PS I don't see any need to remove any fan. You do have a NA?

You only need to remove the pulley if the bearing would be bad, or you need access to one of the bolts to remove the entire assembly:

I have got to admire your spirit, something like this is not a major job but if a person is doing something like this for the first time it can be a daunting task.
You must have metric tools, that is the first thing , Otherwise you will strip some metal off the hexagonal corners and some times that can be dangerous, such as when the wrench slips and you cut yourself or in this case a component under spring pressure is released unexpectedly. Keep your fingers away from that belt; don't let them caught between the belt and pulleys.
Page 7.46 shows the use of a 5mm diameter pin to hold the tensioner in a position against spring pressure. I would recommend the use of a 3/16" diameter drill.
If you lock the tensioner in this position you will have a much easier time removing and replacing the belt.
Pages 7.45 and 7.46 show all you neeed to know at this time, lock that tensioner and get the belt off that alternator.

You can see in James photo immediately above this post that the tensioner in the photo is in its relaxed position. The metal stop on the top half you can see is in a slot in the bottom half. Rotating the top half anti-clockwise would be against spring pressure and this is what you have to do to insert the 3/16 diameter pin. This pin will go through a hole in the top half and lock in a hole in the bottom half. It will stay there held by the spring pressure, the location where the two holes align will be almost at the extreme end of the travel of the top half, all the travel will be against spring pressure.

^^^^^ agreed... do not get discouraged..changing the alternator is a pretty easy job... just be careful and take your time...;)

and as 180 said, use the right tools..you dont want to add more damage to the car or yourself....:(

lol I wouldn't of attempted it but everyone on here said it was an easy job so i thought I can do that!

I'm going to give it another go in a few days (tools permitting) I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully i'll still have 2 arms!

guys is this definetly the right metric socket I need for the tensioner pulley, please confirm...
