while on this subject (switch not gun), someone told me you have to put the switch in the mode you want before starting the car. it's not a switch on the fly. if you are on S and it's a little icy, you have to turn the car off, switch to W, then start the engine. anyone heard this??

What does your manual say?
"S" stands for "Standard" not "Summer".
"W" stands for "Winter/Wet", snow and ice.
