Default Door closing adjustment at striker plate area

Anybody ever try adjusting your door so it doesn't require such a hard pull to get it to close more easily? The only place I could find mention of it was page 23-381 (06 manual) door install & adj. It mentions a centering gauge in step 6 for adjusting the striker plate area. Looking at my plate & not trying to unscrew anything yet, it seems like the striker plate is a permanent bolt in piece only & the adj. must come from within the door mechanism that meets the plate!! Do you think the centering plate is the only method or has anyone worked around this successfully for a more precise closing adj. Thks
