What are you all doing, for the brake dust on your wheels?

washing the wheels every 2 days...

do a search for brake dust - I think someone here changed out their brake pads and has way less problems with this...

As mentioned there are other pads available as usual already proven on the SLK and they seem to have even a slightly positive effect on the already not too shabby brakes.
Another thing seems to be which wheel cleaner/tire shine is used.
It almost seems as if the brake bias is just a hair too much front over rear. That would explain why the fronts are getting sooooooo dirty soooo quick.
Due to the rather high speeds possible and in order to avoid rear instability this is probably the desired setting however.

Geez, how long have you had your car? And why do you go through them so quick?

Check the Tech & Mod forum... plenty of info on better brake pads and all kinds of things.

To answer your question... Some of us switched over to "GreenStuff" pads made by EBC. Really only need to do the fronts as the back are not nearly as bad. EBC pads are $70.00 at tirerack.com. Takes 2-3 days to get them. My dealer installed them for $80.00. They are the same pads used on the MB SLK 320. Highly recommend them.

What cleaner do you use? I've tried two different kinds and still end up rubbing a fair amount of it off with my fingers. Like yesterday when I washed it.

Cruiser - here is how to adjsut your mirrors:

Krusty - I use this cheap junk (soak a couple of minutes) and rise with a pressure hose - I go through a ton of it, but it looks decent and is quick...

So far, its the foaming wheel cleaner that works best in the front. Maybe getting the porterfield pads pretty soon. Cleaning wheels are becoming old school

How are things up in Sacto??? Spent nine years there at Mather... '76 to '85. Really liked the place except for the drap winters.

Have you given any thought to our up coming trip May 15th up the coast? You could drive down and meet us and go back north... so far 15 cars/25 people. Check out the Left Coast Hook-Up thread in the Crossfire Meets forum....

Thanks.... looks like the only part I'm missing is the pressure hose. I always do my wheels last and I'm paranoid about getting water back on the car so I always have a light water stream. No big deal, I've resigned myself to the brake dust.... just taken it in stride as part and parcel of having a performance car.

Krusty... give it a shot, try some different pads. You'll be surprized.

HI...

Keepin' wheels clean... I wax the wheels at least 2 coats right off the bat... and wax when car gets waxed...

...makes it easier to get the brake dust off...

I just use wet cotton towel followed by dry... sometimes use a spray quick shine like Eagle-1 quick shine (whatever it's called)...

Dave...

Brake dust ?? Thank god its almost a thing of the past... I replaced my front pads about 3 weeks ago with the Porterfield's and dust is no longer a problem..The rear were never an issue but those stock front pads had to go..I received a questionaire from DC asking me what I liked or would like to change on my Xfire..My biggest complaint to them was the excessive dust..I listed some other minor things but love mine regardless. Not sure about the "Greenstuff or Rotex" but I cannot be more pleased with the Porterfield Pads...I suppose any of these 3 brands would perform well.. Its nice to drive around every day knowing you don't have to spend 30 to 45 minutes cleaning off dust..

Default pads...

i am all about the "rotex gold" dust free pads.....front and rear.

but i wanted a black brake pad to resemble the stock pads unlike the ebc green pad.

rotex gold = no squeal and no dust.

Default hi

Ok, I don't feel like dealing with the dust anymore so I called the dealership to ask them how much they would charge to put new pads that I bring in,,,I am told by Rick, the CF tech, that his service manager wouldn't want to install my pads because of liability but he referred me to a friend of his that works at the Chrysler dealership in the next town that he knows. Rick has given me a bit of advice when I call and speak to this other guy that if they want to turn the rotors, he suggest that I don't allow them to do that. Supposedly the reason they would want to turn the rotors is because when you put a new brake pad on a surface that has not been turned there is a chance that it will squeak. Seems that they are going to want to turn the roters because if they don't and they squeak I'll come back and say that my new brakes are squeaking. Since my car only has a little over 2,000 miles on it Rick recommended that I tell them to just install the pads and if it squeaks it's on me. Anybody else run into this? Lemme know the scoop, thanks
