Hi everyone. My 2004 XF (manual) has stalled and won't turnover. Here are the details: I was leaving work and everything was working fine. Stopped to fill up on gas, everything still fine. Drove about a half of mile to stop at the store. Went in, came back out and attempted to start the car. Car started, but immediately stalled upon giving gas. Started engine again and same thing happened. Attempted to start engine a third time and got nothing. Wouldn't even turn over. I replaced the CPS about 6 months ago. I suppose it could have gone bad again.. but the odd thing is: the remote will not work the car any longer. I unlocked the car to get in, but immediately after the stall issue the remote will no longer lock or unlock the doors. Any help will be greatly appreciated as the car is still sitting in front of the Modells parking lot.

 

How old is your battery? Maybe you need a new one. These cars act strange with one that is on it's way out.

 

Sounds like a battery do-funny to me.

 

Battery is only a year old. I'm stumped. Heading back with a battery tester now and my spare remote. Bad fuel perhaps?

 

the same thing happened on my 2004 limited. I ended up having it towed to the dealer and it needed a new ECU. I was under warrenty at that time so other than the tow it was no big deal to me.

have you done the ecu resolder thing?

 

Doubtful that remote, bad fuel, crank with start then die are all related.

The fact that it cranked and ran sorta rules out the RCM issue.
Bad fuel won't cause car not to crank (unless you ran battery down).
Let us know how the battery checks out. Weird things happen when they get low or start going bad (one year old batteries can go bad).

 

Tested the battery. 12.5 volts steady even when attempting to start. So the battery is good and the starter is not being engaged.

As far as the engine control unit goes.. would that cause the remote locking system to stop functioning too?

I have free towing with my insurance so I'll probably have it towed to the stealership. Unfortunately, warranty ran out 3000 miles ago.

I've read about the rcm resolder and I plan on checking that out tomorrow. If the ECU does need to be replaced, how much $ am I looking at. I hear it's expensive.

 

theres a sticky on how to do it. I tried, but ended up sending it to Tiged1 just to have it done right...the guys great and gets it back to you fast. PM him though to be sure its the RCM issue

 

Hooked up the OBDII and got the code P0140. Apparently I had an air pump relay failure upon start up. I took out the RCM inspected it for corrosion but the connections looked good. I put the RCM back in connected everything. Turned the ignition and it started up no problem. I don't know if the RCM connections were lose, but whatever I messed around with apparently fixed the problem (for now anyway).

Best of all.. I avoided the stealership! Thanks for the help.

 

Heck getting the RCM case open is the hard part!

Since you were there you should of resoldered while it was open.

tighed1, would you care to comment, as I notice that when RCM type issues crop up on the Forum, they seem to be related Model years of 2004, 2005, and sometimes 2006.

Is it possible that 2007 and 2008 were addressed by Mopar for those years, or just that they are smoking guns, just waiting to go off as they continue to age, (or vibration takes it toll).

Have you seen any trends in the Model years on the RCM's you've seen with bad connections...

 

The way I read this would indicate he did not open it up. Kinda ambiguous, connections not joints mentioned. Just the way it struck me though.

Haven't kept any sort of record. I'm guessing it's a matter of time before folks have trouble.

Mercedes did a recall and a new part number emerged. A1705450305
Hope they fixed the problem with the new part!

 

I have a spare A170 545 05 05 (paid $40 for it) and it's the same part as the OEM one.
It has bad soldering at the usual places as well.
