I can afford another Crossfire
I am heating my house for $4 a day. I bought and installed a wood pellet stove. No more fuel oil. My vocation is HVACR.
Gary, I am selling nothing.

Energy Savers: Wood and Pellet Heating
My step dad and I are still in the process of creating a self sustaining wood heater. Using saw dust and heated copper lines coiled inside of a barrel. Basically you fill the barrel, get it up to temp with propane, shut the propane off, and have an insane amount of heat for North of 48 hours. It recirculates the emitted chemicals to keep going, he says we can make it last almost a week. Im not sure on that. We almost have it nailed for his 2500 sq.ft. house though. But anyway sorry for getting off topic, Wood heating is sooooooo much cheaper.

[quote=tighed1]Do you get the burning wood smell? Nope. No combustion by products in living quarters. Flue pipe temperature is 80 * F. gary
From Consumer Reports:
Fuel
According to the United States Department of Energy, the average cost of a cord of firewood or a ton of wood pellets is $190. But for a true comparison of the costs, you have to look at not just the price of the fuel but also the heating value of the fuel, also measured in BTU, and the efficiency of the heating appliance. Using averages for all three, the Energy Information Administration's Heating Fuel Comparison Calculator estimates it costs $15.15 to produce 1 million Btu using pellets and $9.09 using solid wood. Those figures are between the costs of coal ($9.06) and natural gas ($12.61) and are well below the costs of oil ($18.53), propane ($24.66), and electric furnaces, baseboards, and space heaters ($33.25).
Looks like my natural gas may be my best bet for now.
Last year we actually lost NG feed for 3 days during a deep freeze and it wuz COLD!
Sure would be nice to have a backup heating plan. Looking into this.
Thanks.

I can't speak to pellets, but wood heats you 3x compared to other fuels: once when you cut it, once when you stack it, and again when you have to carry it into the house. I used to split 8 cords a winter years ago, and I am very happy with natural gas and a well insulated house.

My grandpa has one of those for 30+ years now.. he said it paid for itself in the first year, especially because he works for a brush company and brings home all the scrap wood lol. Another viable source of cheap energy is solar-thermal heating.. I did my senior project on it lol. The beauty of it is that it costs a couple thousand to install and can be tied into an existing hyrdonic home heating system, so you can still generate heat at night or on a cloudy day.
Here is the pellet stove and the crossfire I bought with the saved money. I did not know this Crossfire model existed. gary
The car CD player came today from Ebay.

Be careful. Not sure of the requirement in the United States but in Canada, Insurance companies want the installer of wood and pellet stoves to be WETT CERTIFIED. If not, any future claims related to or caused by a faulty installation will be rejected. Check with your insurance company first.
