Hi, been reading threads on oil since my Crossfire has been clic clic clicking more and more loudly lately, not certain if its the lifters, oil air frothing or exhaust leak , keeping an eye on it at 27,000 kms my 2004 is like new, maybe it sits around to much.

On the matter of oil, i think of it like coffee there are many blends with varying tastes when additives are added , the base product remains coffee beans, like esters. Many companies add a variety of products to produce what they think is optimum for their engines, example is energy conserving oils contain molybedenum as a friction reducer hence a different type of oil filter is necessary, motorcyle oils for example the clutch would slip with energy conserving oil, so lots of specialty oils out there that will do the job but if you want the best.
bacon fat would work but for how long is debatable!

I ran a chevy 327 on oil and water for six months - had a crack in the cylinder wall (thanks Sis.. yeah that "HOT" light was working right).. most likely could have got more out of her, but found a deal on a 283..

back on topic, 5w-40 should work fine if you'd rather go that route.. its also more readily available... I just got my oil changed with the Mobil 1 0w-40 and had to wait while they got another 3 quarts delivered from another local store because they didn't keep enough of it in stock...

hate it when things like that happen, ....had my share of engine troubles over the years, nothing compares to my old Epic (nicknamed the epidemic) back in the 70's, it ended up keeping the auto mechanics college class busy for a good part of a year !

I like my Crossfire, mileage is so low its an eventual museum piece ...just recently put new tires on it

Keep putting that Mobil 1 in her.. I'll need another one to buy when I drive this one into the ground..! :p

And do believe those Generals will be next on mine.. haven't seen any bad reviews from Users here so far.

Back to oil... not much chat on here that the CF shop manual states 5w-40 or up to 10w-30 can be used in the Crossfire according to the thermo scale, ever use Syntec synthetic 5-40 blended for euro cars including MB, BMW etc. , to me Mobil in the owners manual is a sponsor promo, albeit its still a good oil , 0-40 seems a little thin, as synthetic oil molecules shear they are reduced to a lower weight so that would be a negative with 0-40 ,... oil is a never ending story ....

:) There are two qualifiers on the oil changes, the 7000 miles and one year, whichever comes first. 15 months doesn't cut it the oil is 3 months overdue. :)

When an oil label says MB 229.3 /229.5 Approval that means the oil manufacturer has actually submitted the specific product to MB & they have tested it. If the label just says meets or exceeds some standard.....that's the oil manufacturer's claim......the product was not submitted to the vehicle manufacturer for testing.

So, M1 0W-40 can be had at most Walmarts now for about $6.50/qt. When I picked up 11 free qts of Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40 at a Chrysler dealership (class action settlement freebie)....they said the regular charge from the parts department was $10/qt. Anyone ever find this particular Pennzoil from a local retailer at a price competitive with Walmart's regular M1 0w40 price?

This is the first time I have gone over a year on any of my cars by following FSS. I check the owners manual at 1 year point and did not see any time limit. Going to look for that 1 year change again.

It is my belief that it is only the FSS system that requires the MB approval.

That's what I think it is, too.

Over at - Bob is the Oil Guy they discuss this stuff all the time. Some guys like thinner oil, some like thicker. A lot of those folks do an oil analysis on their engines. It seems there is a lot of leeway on what an engine is okay with.
