Does anyone know if the engine computer needs to be reprogramed with the addition of K & N Air Filters?

Good question.

Some time ago I read that it is adviseable to disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes after installation of new intake/filter system. Can't remember if it was for Xfire or PT Cruiser (think it was for PT) but I believe it was on the K&N site that I read this.
You may want to investigate.

Disconnecting and reconnecting battery resets computer module to new airflow was the jist of the instructions.

 

What is better if I install K&N filters to the stock air intake?

 

no need for reprogramming...i have been using k&n's for over 15 years.

 

I guess you can disregard my previous post regarding resetting computer module because the latest K&N site instructions for changing the PT intake air flow system simply says to disconnect negative cable on battery (presumably for safety reasons) and then at the end instructs to re-connect battery cable. No mention of computer module.

With K&N filter swap, you don't even have to disconnect battery (according to instructions).

I know I not mistaken as far as reading those other instructions a couple of years ago but it is quite possible that was erronious information at the time.

 

Has anyone had any issues using the K&N's? I recall on my Mustang GT the oil could
contaminiate the wire in the airflow sensor causing spark knock. Any such issues on the
xfire?

 

I checked K & N web site, which advises oil is not problem with K & N filters unless they are over oiled. There is a caution not to over oil.

 

If you put in K&Ns and then unplug the battery so the car would reset, it seems to me like you'd LOSE power. The computer would sense more air coming in and so adjust the fuel or ECU or whatever to balance it out to normal. I can't see it increasing power.

 

It does not matter if you unplug or not, if something changes the comptuer will 'learn' over time and adjust. unplugging just makes it sooner.

You might even gain a mile or so per gallon!

 

You can clean the K & N and reuse; you don't have to buy another filter again.

Filters are very easy to change.
1. Remove engine cover. Just give it a good tug straight up.
2. Flip it over and unscrew the the air cleaner boxes.
3. Clean box and make sure area for filter rubber is clean.
4. Replace filters (By the way you will need two filters) and screw boxes shut.
5. replace engine cover - make sure clips are lined up and reconnect breather hoses.
6. Go drive!!!!!!!!!!

 

how much did your k & N cost and where did you get it

i am looking for a whole air intake kit if anyone knows of a good one
