Poll on Average Miles Per Gallon for Automatics
OK, I want to get a pseudo-scientific poll going here. My X-Fire, 2004, is supposed to be getting 21 city, 28 highway, but instead I'm averaging about 19 highway, with the lowest being 16, the highest being 21. What I want to know is how other people (only with automatics) are doing while driving it regularly, say 50 % highway, 50% city.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I've been getting 19-20 around town, 26-27 on the highway. I have roughly 3500 miles and have checked it every tank. The first couple of tanks, I got somewhat lower mileage. However, I don't have a particularly heavy foot.
23 average. 21 worst. 26 best. mixture of 2/3 highway, 1/3 city. i can get better mileage i'm sure if i were to accelerate lightly all the time. someday on a highway trip i'm hoping to get 30 mpg.
29 mpg??? i don't think some people are reading the question properly (for a mix between city and highway).
jlseagull, if you're trying to see what kind a gas mileage you are capable of getting make sure you're crossfire stays below 3000 rpm while accelerating and driving for the entire tank of gas. it will take the fun out of driving, but that is the only way you'll know for sure whether your crossfire is operating properly. also, i am assuming you are calculating the fuel economy accurately? you'd be surprised how many people don't know how to do it.

I calculated the mileage at 22.6mpg so voted 23mpg on the poll. That was just one tank of gas not over a long period so I'm not sure how accurate that number is. I see that it's in line with the vote average.

I always seem to average over 20 easy.I don't drive slow, but not alot of traffic either.
I'm averaging 27 to the gallon here in the UK. It seems to be consistently that across every tank - and that's with a 70% city and 30% motorway (highway) driving mix. I've also noticed that running on higher octane juice doesn't make a difference. 95 is standard here, 98 is "high". Is that the same in the US / Canada?

Rob M: I'm talking imperial gallon. If I'm correct, an imperial gallon is slightly more than a U.S gallon??
Christo 76: Thanks for that info. I wasn't aware of that
Do any of the UK owners notice any difference with Shell Optimax or BP ultimate in terms of performance or MPG improvement??

By the way, I'd love to hear from the 29 MPG people....what is it, do you feed your X-Fire a special diet of bran muffins or something? The most I've EVER gotten was 21 MPG, and that was almost pure highway driving up to Jersey.

maybe this difference has something to do with why the mileage people are getting in this poll is significantly higher than many of us here in the u.s. would expect.
I'm pretty sure that most people are still getting between 23-26 MPG, American style, though I guess a warning for them Brits, Aussies, and Scots (am I leaving anyone out?) to translate to American units for MPG would be in order for the poll. (Other good ideas include, driving on the correct side of the road, and using 'manly' measurements such as feet, fahrenheit, and inches, among other brilliant suggestions)

It would be easy to rise to the bait, but instead I'll sit here quietly smug in the knowledge that we Brits deliberately have little nuances like these to stop the rest of the world getting an inferiority complex at our vastly superior wit, knowledge, beauty and strength!!
Well, you do have Keira Knightley...not sure what else is terrilbly advantageous of being British....also, I've never before heard a Scot, calling himself a Brit...y'all hate the British I thought, especially at soccer (translated from the un-Americanised term of football)
