Check Oil Level from inside car?

Can anyone give me a hint on how to check the oil level from inside the car. I've read the instructions many times and it just does not come up on the display for me.

This is what works for me:

Turn the key to ON - do not start
WAIT and watch the tripmeter displays
Keep waiting...
When the display changes to a weird little icon:
Poke the tripmeter button twice.

It will then display the oil level status, usually a very hard to read "Ok", or if you've been bad, a number indicating how low your oil is.
