Default Buying a dead car

There is a car for sale near me where the owner says that the battery is dead and that the car needs a new skreem module. It looks as if I would have to buy it as is without starting it. I'm handy, so I think that I would eventually be able to sort things out, but I realize that it might not be all that's wrong. Is there a worse case scenario that I should know about here, other expensive modules, sensors? Thanks!

Put a battery in it and see if any codes can be read. Do not let the seller know before you do this or he may clear all the codes.
How does he know it is the SKREEM?
Depending on price and the cars condition it may be a good deal.

If it hasn't been cranked in a while, the electric fuel pumps seem to lock up. Squirrel Crusher

Thanks for the replies. The seller contacted me today to say that the car was already sold. The asking price was $3,000, but the car had a salvage title, so I don't know if it was truly a good deal.

It's probably a good thing you didn't buy $3000 worth of problems.
