spoiler paint full of bubbles
any idea how to get rid of bubbles under the paint? it is a 2005 car
thanks |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
Many rear wings have bubbles from the factory. Given time they will break open. The only fix that I know is sand them out and repaint.

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
eventually i ran an iron through them and was able to make them smaller or even dissapear. not perfect but way better than before.

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
happy to help. use a plain iron for clothes. place the spoiler half open so the heath does not harm the paint of surroundings. with a pin, puncture tiny holes on the areas with bubbles. heat the iron to medium heath; let it warm up, then run the iron through the bubbles so the air escapes through the hole previously perforated. if there is not enough heat, increase it gradually but go from low to hot slowly or you end up burning the paint. also, dont slide the iron; just press it softly. if you slide it, it will drag the paint and make wave-like wrinkles. and dont put too much pressure. good luck.

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
I would immediately suggest using wax paper or plain paper between the iron and paint to eliminate stress, lifting or other distortion. If heat helps it would still be effective but without the issue of dragging or sticking to the iron. WOODY

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
have you tried that?
am affraid it will stick to the paint. but if you try it then tell us. |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
now some new bubbles showed up. will iron them up, but am affraid i will have to peel off the whole spoiler and sand it, then apply a coat of fiberglass primer, then paint the whole thing.
will tell, but is not an immediate thing i will do. am under the impression that the factory didnt use a primer for fiberglass. or perhaps the surface was not clean? this shouldnt happen. wonder how many are facing this? |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
The wing is metal, not fiberglass. The bubbles are created when the primer or color coat is put on too fast or too thick and does not have a chance to dry properly before the clear is applied; High humidity is major contributor to the cause.

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
i see. thank you for telling.
. so i will use primer for metal instead.and will let dry long enough. |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
When I added turn signal leds into my srt wing, I can assure it is not metal, it's fiberglas with metal inserts! I removed and painted it without much issue.

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
pictures showing it are evidence.fiberglass it is!
i will spray primer for fiberglass, as was my idea, before the paint. |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
The N/A wings are metal and the SRT wings are fiberglass.

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
thanks!
so my coupe is fiberglass! |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
This thread reminds me of a Don Ho song.
’Tiny bubbles in the wing. Make me feel unhappy so I won’t sing. |

so my coupe is fiberglass! Your engine is not super charged; You do not have an SRT6, Thus you have a metal wing!!!!! |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
Steve, there are a couple of SRT6's with a retrofited pop-up wing ......

Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
this is getting interesting!
anyhow, as soon will remove it for painting, will know what it is in my case. i worked for many years at factories where sometimes things were changed and there were no notices. so, perhaps we find ourselves in a situation similar. as i said, soon will know and tell. and as the primer that i will use is recommended for metal and fiberglass, i hope it will do. we'll see. thanks anyway you all for this advice. |
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
Phil, you better check and be certain that primer is compatible with the color coat. If you use OEM type color coat it will be lacquier based and lacquer will bubble most non automotive primers.
|
Re: spoiler paint full of bubbles
tell me more. i was under the impression that using a primer that is for metal and fiberglass allows automotive paint to adhere to it.
the paint is acrylic laquer by duplicolor. and if it is laquer then what else you suggest? i still can return it. not opened. and about the primer? it is also from duplicolor. |
