Auto Tranny Trainable???
After reading the thread that Xfire1 started about shifting the auto, I want to ask some of you autostick owners if you will try something.
Some of you say that your car will upshift on it's own at 6k.
Some say it won't.
Chrysler says that the computer on the Xfires is able to learn your driving habits (trainable?). When we bought our car it would NOT upshift on it's own, at 6k the Rev Limiter kicked in. After many times accidentally doing this, the car still won't upshift on it's own.
However, now if you just put it in drive, leave the shifter alone, and floor it, the car no longer shifts at 6k. It actually seems to bypass the rev limiter, and shifts up at around 6,600 rpm.
So try it and let me know which is true.

I have no complaints about it, just seems strange how they don't all act the same.
Really I'm happy about the way our car is now. I missed the shift several times when we first got the car and hit that Rev Limiter. Now I just leave it in drive and it shifts perfect every time. I just seem to have gained an extra 600 rpm if I drive it that way.
I'll have to wait until the next road trip to New Mexico to find out if it will go that high in fifth gear.
I was just curious after hearing that some of 'em shift up on their own and some apparently don't.
I love the car in every way, except that I bought it for the wife instead of me. (that last sentence could be evidence that the brain cell theory is most accurate).

I'm not trying to be a smart as*! here, but since I have a 6 spd. I'd really like to know how you "miss" a shift with an automatic? Do you mean you just went beyond the RPM that you really wanted to shift at, and the tranny did it for you instead? I'm in the dark here.
i know your not being a smartas*... even if you were its ok! from a dead stop at the on ramp of the FDR, i was locked in first... slapped it into second... and as i slapped it into third... the tranny did not engage...like going into neutral... the engine shot up way past redline (like missing a shift)... then the engine cut itself off... and she started to coast... i brought it to neutral... pulled over... shut the car off...
said a few prayers and it started right up and the tranny responded well again.
this has happened 3 times with less than 500 miles on it...
now i have 8,500 and never has happened since... i hope i am "TRAINING it WELL"...

Ok, I got it. But I'd have to say that it wasn't you that missed the shift, it was the tranny not doing its job the way it was designed. Glad to hear that it seems to have worked itself out.
When I miss a shift, I've got nobody else to blame but myself. (but of course I never miss a shift) Yea...right.

Not use to the car, excited, & nervous. The main thing is that here in middle Tennessee the roads I'm on generally are 2 lane, winding back roads. With about 1 foot of dirt shoulder before it drops very steeply into huge Oak trees. So being a little nervous, all my attention was on the road its self.
I'm not real used to that kind of roads. The part of New Mexico where I've spent most of my life if you do go off the road there is no drop off. And if you are going to hit a tree you'd have to stop and plant one first.

+fireamx ... but you know when the tranny missed its shift, it felt like it was all my fault as if i was in a 6spd manual... and besides all the cars around me heard that car revving near 7,000 rpm and just coasting... they all had a look like YOU MISSED YOUR SHIFT HOTSHOT!!!

Ok, here is what i found best if you are going to shift the auto.
If you hold the shifter to the left for 2 seconds it will put the trans in the lowest gear for your speed and rpm.
If you hold it to the right it goes back to auto D mode.
If you are going for straight line performance it will shift at red line.
If you are in the curves or not full throttle, shift it.

I can see how that was pretty embarrassing for ya. If it's any consolation, we've all been there at one point or another.
My most embarrassing moment happened when I was pulling out of a 50's style drive thru in Cleveland called "Anabels" in my Viper one night. The place was totally packed (as it usually is most weekends) and it was one of those situations where EVERYBODY was looking at me thinking I was going to do a big smokey burn out. Well not knowing if the cops were around or not, I just pulled out real slow and short shifted it. Trouble is, my "skip shift" kicked in, and put me directly into 4th. not where I wanted to be. Now the easiest thing to do when that happens is to not try and fight it, and simply let the shifter go where it wants to, then simply put into 3rd. then 2nd. But no...
I have to try and muscle it, and all you hear is this grinding sound, and moments later, the laughter. My wife looks over at me and says, "I can't believe you just did that." I looked back at her and says "I can't either".
Needless to say, the "skip shift" was unplugged that weekend.

I Would Rather Be In A Viper With A Missed-shift... Grinding And All... Than To Be A Spectator Watching It!!!

IN THE BEGINNING... WHEN I GOT THE xfire... i had difficulty getting the tranny to respond to my shifting... perhaps stupidly i was stubborn and if it didn't shift, especially downshift, i kept banging it to the left until it did respond to my shifting commands... i guess the tranny didn't like the d-shift into a higher RPM... preventing the shift... but now it doesn't hesitate when i want or need it to shift...
at the time i didn't know our tranny was trainable... now i do.

I am in the process of making some phone calls to dealers, mopar clubs, and other sources in the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area to see if we can get a meet going somewhere. There are about 6 xfires now in this area, and about the same in the Sevier County area.
Trying to set something up on a weekend when they're not having another Rod Run or show in Pigeon Forge (too crowded to move when one of the other runs are going on).
I'll make a post about it after I make some more calls.
