I may just take mine off...I could get copies done with a friend of mine (in vinyl) if there were enough interested...and certainly cheaper than $104! Probably could do them in various colors, for those that might want to do that...

I've had mine off for about 3 months now. No scratches, no rain gets in, and it looks so much better.

I am hoping to take the quick info route on this - just some reaction to this post without full forum research. Meguire's Gold Class Trim Detail - Buckwheat - how did it work? Also noted that Mother's Back to Black was mentioned. Are these long term or just quick term fixes? I found a fix that lasts about a week - it is neither of the two above. Pllz send advice.

Thanks! Alicia

My worry would be whether the seal works like it should...

For those that asked. I used Black is Back followed by a product called Gummi Pflege Stift (1z-usa.com). I used this on my Mercedes and it works great. I also use it on all my rubber on my other roadsters. I learned about this product from the Mercedes forum. I believe the combo of these two is what makes it work. Black is Back for color restoration and GFS for care and protection.

I live at 7000' so I get a fair share of UV and I have not had to redo this strip for over 2 years.

Thank you Hawk. I am guessing that Black is Back may be the same as Back to Black (would be easy to mix up the names of those two....) Then the Gummi product. The combo sounds perfect. And your endorsement re UV damage prevention sure does count! Tho at sea level I can imagine what 7000' does. I will find each product. Thanks again.

No leaks, no scratches, and I take very good care of my cars... I came back from the dragon and it is in the body shop getting rocks chips fixed, as I am that picky... That rub strip looked ugly from day one...glad I removed it....looks like a roadster now....

Well if it hadn't popped up with recent posts, I'd have forgotten all about this. smfrycruzr my friend, what a great idea. So a vinyl shop? What was the name?

Even with the tape there, if you don't watch the angle of your washing wand when rinsing, you'll get water in there...but hey, you need to clean that area anyway, so I may just start on this project on a nice day...Sunday is supposed to be up to 60° so maybe then.

Hey Erzer,
I just used a local vinyl lettering/sign shop. The name is AlphaGrafix, not to be confused with the national chain-AlphaGraphics......:p

Anyone ever just take the rub strip off the car, and glue a peice of foam, or felt to the piece below the rear window that contacts the deck?

If you are getting water in there from removing that piece of thin layer of tape, not a seal, but a piece of tape, then you are too damn close with the pressure wand....I wash mine with a garden hose and have never had water get in there. The TAPE was there to keep from scratching the car, or the rubbing of the top movement from scratching the car....not a seal. Each to their own...mine has been off for 5 years....not a problem with any of the above worries...and it is black...try to keep a black one clean and scratch proof...
