I was driving behind a car the other day but I didn't recognize the make until I got right up to it. It was a Mercedes convertible, a model I had not seen before. It looked like an oversized Crossfire, even had the exact three line side treatments of the Crossfire. It looked low and wide and very beautiful.
It sounds as if you may have seen an old Mercedes 300SL roadster from the mid-50's to early '60's. You don't see them on the road much anymore. because a good one is worth a half a milion bucks.

It would have been interesting if Mercedes had saved the Crossfire styling for an update of the SLK, instead of marketing it as a Chrysler. It probably would have been more successful with a Mercedes emblem on it.

I'm not sure if that is what I saw or not, it looked as a newer design. Sorry I didn't get the chance to find out from the guy who was driving it with a big grin on his face.

I had a similar encounter. I saw a car approaching and at first glance I thought it was a wide Crossfire, but as it got closer I realized it was some kind of late model Mercedes coupe. It passed by and I could not tell which model it was...
Maybe one of these???
I'ld be grinning for sure!

I'm still shocked by how ugly the new SL is. Mercedes were often a tad bland but always in a confident sort of a way, which was fine. Then a decade or so ago they started to get a bit more aggressive and looked great. Now they look like something from Mad Max! The SL is supposed to ooze elegance, this new model seems to ooze mucus.
Maybe it was based on this chap:

Just for giggles, I did the 'build it yourself' option on the site.
A fully tricked out SL550 AMG was $240,645.00 not including tax, tag and title and dealer prep, but of course us gobamillionaires don't sweat the small change ....
I, of course, ordered 2 so I could have a spare ........

Actually, I think it's much more likely that sailorman saw a recent Mercedes SL than th '50's-60's 300SL that I mentioned, but I still think that the earlier SL influenced the styling of the Crossfire. I also suspect that the Crossfire design was originally intended to be an SLK. All they would have had to do is put in a grille with a 3-pointed star. It's easy to imagine the current SL grille reshaped slightly to fit the opening on a Crossfire, and I think it would look pretty good.

It's possible you were behind the new SLS AMG Roadster - a pretty classic MB look but it is quite large and very low and wide. This is the roadster version of the new SLS AMG Gullwing.
OK, thanks guys, , that is what I saw- I googled it and it was an SLS AMG Roadster with the top down and a guy driving with a big grin. . Larger more expensive version of the Crossfire Roadster

The "design" of the Crossfire came from the mind of Eric Stoddard, known here as CREATOR, and not from previous Benz calss roadsters. The new SL roadster's, with their behind the front wheel gill vents, may just as likely be a takeoff of the Crossfire than the other way around.
Stoddards influence can be seen in the Hyundai Geneisis coupe and soon may appear behind a FORD badge.
As an MB advocate,I like the new SL's and having a little bit O' the Crossie in their DNA makes me a fan. The '62 MB roadster styling revisted is exciting. MB or Chrysler.

The SLS was introduced two years ago as the new Gullwing, but last year the Roadster version was added to the line. Same car, just minus the gull wing doors and roof. Just like they did with the original 300SL, which was available as both a gull wing coupe and a roadster with traditional doors.
