Default Mopar to be Sold?

This story was just posted on AutoBlog:
Chrysler May Sell or Close Mopar

There are perhaps better bloggers out there to eulogize the potential passing of Mopar, Chrysler's high-performance and specialty parts division. Those with more wrinkles on their brow could reflect on days when Mopar muscle ruled the streets and stalked stoplights like a hungry predator. It's future as a division of the newly-named Chrysler LLC is in doubt, as reports are surfacing this morning that it may be sold or even closed, along with Chrysler Transport, the division that delivers parts and supplies to the company's various plants.

Of course, everything's on the table during a turnaround, so the possibility of Chrysler selling a division that defines a large part of its identity is not surprising. It appears the idea of shedding Mopar was put on the table during contract talks with the UAW that are happening as we speak. Mopar and Chrysler Transport represent about 1,300 paid employees, and it appears these people are being used as a bargaining tool in a high stakes game of chicken. Hopefully they'll still have their jobs after Sept. 14th when the current contract between the automaker from Auburn Hills and the UAW expires.

That's not good news for Chrysler. So our car will be neither MB nor Chrysler - perhaps we should just call it a "Karmann Crossfire" from now on.

Jalopnik has a "Save Mopar" page going. Here's the link. As some of the commenters pointed out, if the American manufacturers continue shedding their historical heritage, then what will they have left to sell? The high-end European brands understand this and offer lots of support for their older "historic" lineage models. Detroit needs to learn that lesson before it's too late.

My feelings exactly. Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep have worked so hard to revive their storied Performance Heritage, that it would be a CRIME to abandon it now. American brands have something that the Asians don't, that's Passion, Heritage and History. If they abandon all that, there really is no soul left...

This is horrible news... I prefer German cars and always did... but as stated before American cars are similar in the fact that they have 2 things that no asian company can ever acquire with their cars and that is Passion and History...

Unfortunately less and less people are beginning to care for this... Here where I live almost every teenager I see is driving a Honda Civic Coupe, Nissan Altima (Coupe), Toyota Celica.. and things of the nature, Although I wasn't in the states for that long, but I think that maybe 20 some years ago teenagers were more gravitated to Mustangs, Pontiacs, and Mopars... that cost about the same and in some cases even less... than the Jap cars...

Maybe I am a loyalist, but I just can't see myself loving a Jap car... ever...

I've loved ONE Japanese car. It was an RX-7. That is one of VERY few Jap cars that truly has passion...
