Everytime I start up the engine, i would hear a rumble from the exhaust, like a v8 mustang with straight pipes... and i got the car about 1 month. The rumble stops after about 10 seconds and Today i decided to take a look under my car, see what could cause that noise. From what i have seen the previous owner removed the muffler and kept the resonator... WHAT AN IDIOT !!!... i said, after reading all the posts about keeping the muffler and cutting the resonator off.
I don't know what to do, I like the sound of it, i am worried about the waranty and I hope it's not gonna be considered void or something.
Has anyone else done this to their car? And also in your opinion is it good or bad?

 

Actually, a guy just did a post a couple of weeks ago saying that he removed the resonator, etc. He removed the muffler and kept the resonator. There is a video on YouTube of his car autocrossing in MD.

 

Other than the fact that its louder, and the heavier more restrictive resonator(imo) is still there it wont cause any problems and it shouldnt affect warranty at all.

 

it will not create any problem.. but it is odd.. if you like the sound keep it the way it is..

it really doesnt look all that bad...but id ditch the resonator and add a muffler just in front of the tips. but thats just personal preference, if you want to save the $ just leave it.

 

well now I am curious about how the muffler would sound... THere was a guy on this board selling the full exhaust... maybe i can get the muffler from him and try it that way, if i don't like it i can prob just go back to the way it is now... does cutting and welding the pipes several times do anything to the rest of the exhaust system?

I think your biggest issue, being in California, will be when you eventaully (five years, I think) will have to pass smog. The good thing is new cars are exept for awhile.

 

When I removed the muffler, the sound was a definate inprovement and you can read my Janurary 23 posting "exhaust already:heres the sounds" and you can see the you tube posting I did.

I first removed the muffler and gutted it but that did nothing to the sound even with all the baffels and 5 pounds of fiber glas removed, so I just added the stainless y pipe. It is all in the postings under my name including the limited slip differential upgrade photos.

Its on the rack now for a new set of heavy duty springs and I think it has gotten more miles going up and down this winter than on the road changing one thing or another like the Xenon lighting additions. Woody.

 

It's six years for a new car. Whether anyone peeks under your car during a smog check and discovers your missing muffler is another matter.

 

Sort of off topic, but, speaking of mufflers being missing, how do all of the Harley owners get away with no mufflers, just running straight pipes?

I own a bike and like the loud sound, but often have wondered why no muffler on a car is a big deal, but makes no difference on a bike if there isn't a muffler.

Here in Ma. cars and bikes are regulated for exhaust noise. Bikes have a 98 decibel limit. Cars may not be altered at all to increase noise.

 

Then i would just alter it to increase performance, the added sound was an indirect result.

 

Provided that there is proper prep work and the welds are clean there's no big deal about welding pipes.

The biggest issue is making sure that there's no restriction on the inside diameter to impede exhaust flow, i.e. pipe mis-alignment, or welds flowing into the pipe causing a "venturi" effect.




Woodlands1........many states allow bikes to be loud as more of a safety measure....The reasoning is that you can at least HEAR the bike even if you can't see it. We all know bike riders are way more vulnerable simply because of being out in the open, as well as the small size of the bike and rider compared to a vehicle.
