I have only put about 500 miles (mostly highway) on the SRT6 in the last three weeks. I bought it in January and stored it until then. I had the dealer from whom I purchased it change the oil to Mobil1 0W-40 since they had originally put in regular 10W-30 oil.

Otherwise, as far as I know, it is original spark plugs and air filter.

I notice a small amount of black carbon, almost like soot, on the exhaust outlets. It cleans right up, but I don't recall seeing this build up as fast on my roadster. Is this normal for an SRT6 or do you think I have a potential problem (worried about burning oil)? I did check the oil and it was down about 1/2 quart so I topped it off. I did not think to check it when I got the car and it could just be the boneheads who last changed the oil did not realize it takes more than 8 qts. I'll be checking the oil frequently for a while. There is no spotting under the car.

 

It's normal...the SRT-6's run RICH from the factory. It's always better to run rich as opposed to running lean (and blowing things up).

 

Your car burns unleaded and the absence of lead means that the exhaust will burn black. The lead deposits used to give you a snow like appearence which also caused the exhaust system to rot away faster. Black is also rich which is WAY better than lean and overly hot, enjoy Woody

 

Every time I take off and mash the pedal, my friends and co-workers say a big puff of black smoke comes from my exhaust. I think thats why they painted the exhaust tips black.

 

Will a pair of K&Ns flow more air and "lean" it out any?

 

Use a sos pad with meguires chrome polish and you will see that the tips are not painted black they are covered with black soot and will clean up nicely with some strong elbow grease. It took me 4 hours to clean mine back to the original chrome.

I've used Never Dull and it does a real nice job without risk of scratching the chome. Avoid the sos pad.

 

The SRT6 tips are black with polished rims. The inside will stay black, only the normally aspirated crossfires have silver inside.

 

That's correct. I've owned both an 04 and an SRT6, and the difference in the pipe tips is real. In fact, I even recoated the insides on the SRT with additional heat-resistent black paint to make the contrast with the polished outsides of the tips even more pronounced. As they say, "MIYO."

 

I too, notice some carbon build-up on the tips after a couple hundred miles. Nevr Dull wadding works great to shine them without scratching.

 

when I bought my 2006 srt6 last may it had 4,000 k and i thought the inside of exhaust pipes was painted black . I drove it for 4 months and saw another srt6 in New Hampshire and his inserts where chrome 6 hours of rubbing and trying several products the carbon started disappearing. Are you sure that they are painted black??

 

Mine are. I believe NeverEnough's aren't though.

 

I've yet to see an SRT without the black painted tips. I'd imagine enough elbow grease would begin to remove the paint.

Anybody have a real low-mileage (almost new) SRT6? Let us know the state of your exhaust tips. The tips on my n/a roadster are chrome and the tips on the SRT6 are also chrome, although a little dirty when I received it. No sign of black paint.

 

Mine are painted black on the inside..

The outside soot is normal... I just wipe down during car washes...

 

I have a SSB with 1200miles, bought with 120 miles, and the exhaust tips have always been black. I also had the SSB '04 coupe and they were silver. I thought the SRT was really dirty until I tried to wash it off. Black PAINT!

I bought mine with 50 miles on it, the inside of the tips are black. I think it's a plating not paint, my guess is black oxide plating, I don't know for sure but that's what it looks like.

 

Mine had black paint when I bought it with 3,450 miles on it.
The SRT6 Coupe I test drove in MI had ~500 miles on it, it also had black tips.

 

No to your K&N question Mine also has the same black where as my limited never did.
