Default Star Diagnostics and the Crossfire

Well, I had my car in to an independent mercedes shop yesterday afternoon to have my lower temperature (160 degree) thermostat installed. They did a great job, but here is the weird part. I gave them a sheet showing how to turn the fan engagement temprature down so it would come on at a lower temperature. It was a page from a Mercedes hooked up to a Star Diagnostics machine.

The shop owner came into the waiting room a few hours into things, and told me that Star Diagnostics would not talk to my computer at all. They didn't believe me when I told them my car would hook up to their star diagnostics, because it was a Chrysler. I assured them it was a Mercedes computer and it should hook up fine, so I was completely suprised when he came out and told me that the computer wouldn't talk to their machine.

So my question to everyone out there is: Have you had your computer hooked to star diagnostics, and if so, did it act like any other mercedes? Is there a chrysler-only version of Star Diagnostics that has to be used? Why weren't they able to turn down my fan engagement temp? This is really confusing and I am not sure where I need to go to have this done now. I don't want to go to the Chrysler dealer, and most of them tell me they cant connect to my car's computer anyway. Any insight?

Well this confirms it; we drive Chryslers .

I wonder what equipment the Chrysler Stealers us to diagnose our cars?

On a related note. InMotion told me that there is no option in the program for changing the fan turn on temp. Has anyone been able to do it?

Just spoke to Chrysler and they use a DRB and/or the STAR system. I guess it depends on what you’re trying to do.

Hmmm. When I had to have my airbag controller replaced, I was told by the body shop that only 4 places in the state could reset the computer for the new one...I assumed they meant 4 chrysler dealers that had star diagnostics...but also assumed that ANY mercedes benz dealer could have done it. Now I see I was wrong. Whatever is used on our cars, only 4 places in Colorado have the capability, and one of them is my Chrysler dealer.

Unfortunately, I dont want THEM knowing I am tampering with the thermostat. But then, it sounds like from Inmotion, that there isn't a way to turn it down anyway.

From our experience to change anything other then basic spark and fuel maps you need to have the ECU out of the car. The OBD read on these cars is extremely limited.

A good friend of mine is a mercedes tech.
I'll get him to plug in his star diag. to my car and see exactly what we can change and post a list.

We have a couple of STARScanners here @ school and I tried to hook one up to my '05 Limited. In the top left hand side, it had body code ZH or ZB (I don't remember) and I couldn't manually communicate. It wouldn't automatically identify the VIN as well. I thought the Crossfires were CAN equipped.

On a sidenote, I remember last year in my Fuels&Ignition class, I was using a DRBIII on my Jeep, and there was a prompt for the Crossfire in there.

I would be very interested in this adjustment if you can verify that it can be done.

My tuner had the Star Diagnostic - should have had him adjust the engine coolant fan turn on temp - but my local dealer can do that also....

I hope his (VRP) headers work out...
