Default OBD II reader recomendation

What is a good OBD II reader to buy to get error codes and other data. What are any of you using and what capabilities does it have? I couldnt find any mention of one on a search. Thanks for the help.

I bought the Nitrod:
http://www.nitrod.com/product.html

Works great, just read the incidentals.
  • Turn-Off Check Engine Light ( ) & Delete DTCs The VPM-100G can clear the DTCs from your vehicle’s ECU and turn-off the Check Engine Light (CEL). The CEL is the visual flag raised by the ECU to indicate that a system or component malfunction was detected.
  • Displays and Logs Real-Time Vehicle Sensor Data The VPM-100G displays sensor data with digital gauges or on Cartesian graphs. The data is obtained directly from the vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The graph displays, plot the sensor values versus time. The plotting can be paused at any time for you to review the logged values using a scrolling marker. For example, the plotting function comes in handy when determining the health of your vehicle’s oxygen sensors by observing their oscillating voltage signal as a function of time.
    • Factory Wide Band O2 Sensors (A/F - Lambda)
    • Air Intake Manifold Pressure (Vacuum/Boost)
    • Mass Air Flow
    • Engine Coolant Temperature
    • Air Intake Temperature
    • Narrow Band O2 Sensors
    • Battery/Alternator Voltage
    • Tachometer & Vehicle Speed
    • Spark Advance
    • Long- and Short-Term Fuel Trims
    • Throttle Position
    • Engine Load Value

Maxcichon, thanks. Unfortunately they are out of stock. It looks good and the price is acceptable.

Has anyone tried or know anything about the Innova 3130 CanOBD2 reader? Not as complete as the Nitrod VPM, but looks pretty good.

Thanks,
MikeR

I bought this program for my laptop.
http://www.palmerperformance.com/pro...scan/index.php

It has some cool features beside OBDII, like dyno and 1/4 mile mode. Also you can datalog with it. Unfortunately my brand new laptop crapped out and I haven't got a replacement yet, so I really haven't messed with the program that much.

Give Autoenginuity.com a shot before you decide, It only works thru your p.c. though. I bought the ST05 & was very pleased with what I can do on road tests (snap shots) & come home to later review on my p.c. screen anytime I'm ready. They will be out with an attachment to work with the ST05 on our Xfires to get into every module we have that are now hidden to all other scanners I have ever researched into. Theres a nice feature incl. with the ST05 called SPEED TRACER which can be used to calculate 0-60,1/4 mile,& much in between. You just insert your info like tire size, gearing, treat width, & much more & you have a mini dyno on board thru your p.c. record as you go & view later when your ready. I have no connection whatsoever with this company or any other after market firm, just a satisfied customer. GOOD LUCK

I'm in the market for one of these, too. I'm looking for a handheld unit. In addition to the standard scan codes, I'd like one that reads the automatic transmission fluid temperature.

A bump for the autoingenuity software. another one to look at is called EASE.

Both use laptop, palm pilot, etc.

It SEEMS accurate, but it is instant and changes with every gust of wind, passing oncoming traffic and even the slightest grade, up or down.

I have an older version of their software that runs on a PDA. I am upgrading the OBDII connector to bluetooth and will use it with my Sprint Touch cellphone.
A big plus mentioned is the Speed Trace to get your 0 - 60 and 1/4 mile times. I haven't used it on the xfire yet but it has come in handy resetting CEL errors.

Nitrod is out. They just responded to my email and they are bringing out two new models in the fall and will have nothing until then. So I am still looking. I was wanting a tool that was self contained but may have to seriously look at the software packages for palm pilot or laptop.

Autoenginuity will do it all PC , MAC , PALM and pocket PC. I have been very happy with mine. Have had it for about 4 years. They even have a wireless OBDII plug.
