Thinking of an SRT-6... first post
Hey all, ive been registered for some time and have stopped back from time to time to glance over the forums.
After realizing how affordable the Crossfires have become and wanting a different car in my life (having tuned and played around with almost 30 different neons.
) I have been on an SRT-6 kick lately.
I had a SRT-4 that ran 12.5s and it was alot of fun, and am currently wrenching on a 1995 Neon with a full SRT-4 transplant with the plans of going well past 11s, I am now looking for a fun/fast daily.
I have always LOVED the Crossfire, but was bummed and pretty much turned off by the SRT-6 for Chrysler using the benz power plant and only offering it in an auto.
Fast forward 4 years later where prices are now reasonable im really considering one! Ive seen some decent numbers out of you members here and that is just B-A!
Soooo, I am just looking for any comments, input, suggestions you all may have.
With the SRT-6, any specific issues that are common place? Anything to lookout for? What are some common mods people do, wouldnt mind picking one up and seeing if I can get it to dip low 12s on street tires. What would be required? Reliablility is key.

Reliability has been pretty good, although not that many of the cars are in the 50k+ range. The only major problem on the car is the Intercooler Pump which will rob you of power if it goes out. If you plan on modding the car it'll be neccessary to get a higher powered pump, notibly a Johnson CM30 pump that most of the modders have.
Getting into the low 12's isn't all that hard in these cars, in the winter (keep this in mind) if you don't use Nitrous. A 178mm (from ASP/Evosport), 181, or a 185 pulley (both from LET), with an Intake, Tune (Rob's Inmotion tune seems to be the best so far) and possibly an exhaust. I'm not sure if the Code3 Supercharger pulley has anyone in the low 12s yet (could be wrong) but it's the cheapest of the bunch and is equivalent in dyno's and boost as the 178. Rob from NeedsWings is currently making Intake Manifolds for the car that seem to pack quite a HP improvement.
If you decide to do the cooling upgrades it'll run about $550 (that's what I paid) for a Johnson pump, larger HE, and Phenolic spacers. The last 2 are subject to srutiny if you even need them but I got them anyway.
The only problem is once you start dipping under 12.5 or even 13's is the traction in these cars. You can get some Drag radials which are street tires (as you know) but if you want to use the stock PS2's or Conti's then you'll get traction issues once you start putting on the power. I've only broken the 2.0 60' time once in my Conti's @ stock pressure but the PS2's seem to be getting around a 1.8 time. Anyone here dragging their car for low 12's on this site is using a DR setup.

Or buy some winter tires & throw a bag of sand in the cargo area.
Just curious, but why would a Benz engine in a Chrysler vehicle not interest you? The M112 engine is one fine piece of engineering, smooth, solid & can run over 120mph all day. 150+ is easily obtainable in this car, repeatedly so.
And you can't ask for more reliability than a Mercedes engine!

Yes be very carefull with that nitrous stuff as it may cause you to run with big blocks and other really really fast cars even though you only have a 6 cyl. Keep it as slow and safe as you can. Plus drag radials are needed below 12.5 or so ET as 95% of the modded srt-6's on this site are doing that with only street tires
I guess my point is ACRucrazy, read between the lines and the car can pretty much do as much or as little as you want. You will get mostly good info from this site and some misinformed stuff too...

Seeing others get some good numbers out of these cars is nice.
As far as being turned off about it being "benz powered" and what not was just mostly (for me, in my opinion) against the grain of SRT.
Again, just my opinion, noting against Mercedes (actually, wanting one more now so I can whoop up on a co worker Benz worshiper)
When I thought SRT I thought of brute American power, with at a good price. (I still think they should have offered it in a manual)

Anyways, im over it. After a few years reading some follow up reviews it seems the overall opinion is this is a decent little car.
Question I cant seem to find an answer too, was the SRT-6 only avail in 05? Because everyone I seem to find forsale seems to be an 05.
BTW, I found a grey coupe at a local dealer I may check out tomorrow. I am afraid too though because I dont want to bring one home... just yet

Graphite gray is the prettiest color. Go for it...you won't regret it even if you don't mod it very much. Stock it's a fast car and a head turner.

Well, no need to look any further. The 3 that were in dealers lots locally were "blue book" (which is fair by all means IMO)
Dealers not willing to budge on price, I found a first owner private party selling a Blue Roadster with nav, not my first choice of a grey coupe, however after some painless negotiation I picked it up for a song!! It still has the factory warranty for another 6 months too, so thats nice.
I am in love and have ZERO regrets. I have NEVER had a smile on my face driving a car like this one did for me!!
The only thing it needs badly are tires.
Im gonna go the cheap route for now, i just spent my fun money.
Do you guys do any different size tires other than OEM on the stock wheels? I need to order some tomorrow forsure, this can not wait.
A set of Kumhos Ecsta SPT will run me about $600 which I consider a great price.
Oh boy, I just got home and I know im not going to be able to sleep tonight!!

The Kumho Ecsta SPT's are a very good choice. I have them on the back of my SRT6 Aero and they work fine. I have used them at the track also and got a 12.5 @ 113mph when the track was prepped good. Glad you found a sweet deal. Enjoy your new baby. Watch out for the jealous wife/girlfriend though.
