Winter Project
I have been kicking the idea around of making a carbon fiber airbox or intake. One because I want one Two because I want to see if anyone else wants one. Right now I have the needswing intake on my SRT and am thinking about wrapping it in carbonfiber. IT works great the way it is but I cant get over looking at VRP's set up and think I want that but not for the $4000 price tag. SO my question to people with the SL set up is anyone interested in a VRP or Renntech style airbox? I don’t see why you wouldn’t gain more hp with a larger opening at the back going into the throttle body. The increase over the stock SL set up would not be a HUGE gain but none the less a gain and a sexier looking air box.
My second question is anyone interested in wrapping their needswings intake in carbon fiber? THIS would be completely cosmetic. PRICES would vary depending upon what material we used. There is a substitute for carbon fiber which is black fiberglass weave, this looks the identical to carbon fiber just does not have the strength properties. WHEN I SAY STRENGHT properties I don’t mean omg I can snap this thing in half with my hands, more like no one will be making suspension coils, A arms, drive shafts and or rims out of black fiberglass. For and airbox this would be completely structurally sound.
ANyway here is an idea of what it could look like from VRPs set up we have more room against the firewall so it would be thicker and less of an indent at the top

IMO this crowd needs H/P gains and cost to get their juices and $$$ flowing. It looks good, as long as it flows more. I have proven that the intake has much to offer at the bottom of the RPM range. Peak H/P looks good but getting more "area under the curve" on the dyno is good for the street and also strip. What is the $ range/ Woody Enjoy.

My question to you and the forum who have run some of the H/P numbers is, is the SL set up more efficient then the needswings set up. Like I said I am currently running the needswings kit and love it, the route in my mind would be just to wrap Rob's intakes if that is the most efficient intake. I remember the great debate awhile back and cannot really remember the conclusion that was reached between which intake and which pulley worked best. Quite a few of you are running the SL set up just from looking at it I KNOW IT CAN BE PERFECTED AND gains from it can be MAXIMIZED
Two pipes are idealy better than one. Needswings is lower restriction than stock due to the turns and filter material and attendant friction losses. The Sl seems to be good and it retains the factory image, styling.
The insulation that I had placed on the intake pipe was helpful but not worth it overall. At an airflow speed of 157 MPH the air does not get a chance to heat much AT WIDE OPEN THROTTLE when the mass flow is up. [FYI, 16 cubic feet of air weighs about one pound].
The photo that you had on your posting really looks smooth and rich, I can see many street people going for it, versis the strip people that only want to feed the need for speed.
Woody Enjoy

I agree 100% accept for the fact there seems to be a 50/50 split between heavily modified track people with the 55 set and needswings set up.

1) people who allready have an intake and want them wrapped in CF
2) people looking to purchase a wrapped intake
3) people looking to purchase an intake MADE completly of carbon fiber
4) People who are willing to do an exchange program or deposit program for something that will once again BE COMPLETLY cosmetic.
IT is not going to be cheap like I said, to do it the right way with seamless carbon overlay it is about $70 a yard JUST FOR THE FABRIC, the more you buy the better deal you get. The best part about this, is it can only open the doors to more CF projects under the hood.

Hey jonny, I believe there were alot of people looking to get things wrapped in synthetic carbon fiber. I don't know if your looking to just do intakes, but I know there was a decent market for wrapping interior and exterior parts.
The synthetic looked good but not really legit......... Wrapping interior pieces in carbon fiber is not really an option seeing as they would be thicker. The option of making carbon fiber interiors would be easier and better looking. Getting mounting hardware to line up for the center surround would be the only tricky part.
