Finally Someone Raced Me!! SRT-6 vs Lancer Evo
So I'm at a red light on my way home with my girlfriend and a EVO pulls up next to me and revs his engine.
It's a double left turn and when the light turns green he guns it first so I follow suit. This bringing the first scream from the GF.
About maybe 200-250 yards ahead the lanes merge, so we both knew that is our finish line. His EVO is definitely modded just not quite sure with what. Everytime he changed gears you could hear like compressed air being released noise, if that helps.
I just slam on the gas and by the time the lanes merge I have about 1 -1 1/2 car lengths on him, and going almost 90mph. This is the first time in my entire SRT ownership where someone actually engaged me right off the line. So that **** was fricking a big adrenaline rush. The whole time this is going on my GF was screaming and slapping my arms, lol.
So anyway, we get to the next light and I turn left and he was going straight than he decided to follow. My GF gave me specific orders not to do that again with her in the car. I said jokingly to get out, haha.
I pull into a convenient store to pick up a 12 pack and he follows... I thought, here we go, some punk wants to fight me now because he lost. I park and he gets right behind me, so again I thought "here we go".
Suprisingly he was older then expected and just "challenged" me again. My GF quickly said no, but we continued to talk and apparatnly a bunch of cars meet up Friday nights and race.
Few Questions....
Should I expect a bunch of ricers running with this EVO?
I should have no problems beating and EVO right?
Is a EVO considered a ricer?
Damn that was fun though, this thing really can move. I'm officially jealous of you guys with Mods now.

EVO 9 OR EVO 10?
And those cars are pretty fast especially being a 4 door, but c'mon now... if a crossfire pulls up at a nice restaurant it's sure to get many looks vs. if an Evo pulls up a few people might respect the little econo box.

First off "ricer" is a mentality, not the fact that someone drives a japanese car. Second, I would more than likely expect that he rolls with more japanese made cars, and possibly some "ricers". Third, stock for stock you should beat an evo. Watch out tho cuz once they are modded right, they are beasts.

Your asking the wrong guy? What is the difference between the 9 or 10. It was the new body style I know that. The turbo and transmission were seriously loud. I know he modded the crap out of it.
Those things have a ton of mods right??

Oh-
I'm kind of new to the racing type car scene. I thought ricer meant civic/integra.
Evo's can be made FAST real easily................you'd be lucky to hold up against a stock or barely modded one. They are AWD so you will lose off the line guaranteed IF the guy knows how to drive. I have several friends with Evos which put down more power to all 4 wheels than the highest hp SRT-6. One has 550AWHP running on E85, one has 610AWHP running on c16 race fuel(on street and track) and one has nearly 1000AWHP on c16 and they all drive on the street and to/from the track.

Do you know what that transmission noise/sound could've been? Or was it just the turbo pushing more air as he changed gears? It did sound like 2 separate sounds though.

Thanks for the answer. I can see why you mod this now. That short little race was very addicting, I don't know what I liked more, the speed or my GF screaming.
So it was some type of special transmission?

EVO's can be really fast. Most of the stock EVO's times on drag times are very close to stock SRT-6 times - generally in the low 13's. That said there are a LOT of modded EVO's posting times in the 11's. Beware of modded EVO's, but also don't be fooled by modded plain-jane Lancers.

Yeah that's exactly what it sounded like, thanks.
Like everyone else already said, EVOs can be fast. You shouldnt have a problem with a stock one from a roll. Racing from a dig isnt worth it because they are AWD. Watch out for the ones that have a bunch of gauges on the A-pillar as that is generally an indicator that they are decently modded (ie: turboback exhaust, intake, tune, fmic, boost controller)
As far as ricers, where I live, they generally hang out with some fairly quick cars. When cruising the streets, sometimes "ricers" follow them around and try to race them because they are faster, but I don't think they actually hang out with each other. Down here, EVOs hang out with some STIs, supras, LS1s, cobras, and each other of course lol.
get some mods on your car! speed is addicting, but be safe about it and dont scare your g/f away. mine have hated that and feared for their lives when in the car for that.

First off, the noise you heard is the blow-off valve. As someone had previously mentioned, it is standard with any turbo setup. A turbocharger works off of the exhaust gases produces in the engine. The exhaust gases spin the turbine which compresses the incoming air to a higher pressure which means higher power when ignition in the engine block. The fact that they work off of the exhaust makes them inherintly bad for drag racing. A supercharger (like our SRT's) works kind of like a vacuum. Like the turbo, it compresses the air into the plenum giving a more power on the ignition, but unlike a turbo, it doesn't require the engine to 'spool' up the turbine before that power is realized. This is the reason that you have 'instant' power while he takes a while to bring the power on, otherwise known as 'Turbo Lag'. Most modern turbos are pretty good with this, but drive a mid-70s Porsche or 80's turbo hatch and you'll know what I mean!
Now the important part, the Lancer is Mitsubishi's bottom of the barrel car. If you buy a base model Lancer, its kinda like driving a Neon. When you spec an Evo model, its just like putting lipstick on a pig. You have a fast, trackworthy 4-door, but its still just a commuter car. The Crossfire is FAR more refined, better engineered, well built and uses far higher standards in quality than the Mitsu. You can easily mod out an Evo to 1000HP, but people do that all the time with Pintos, old Datsuns, Novas and Chevelles. It doesn't make them good cars, just wicked quick in a quarter mile run.
In summation, I wouldn't waste your time or your gas racing any 'ricer' car. Driving a Crossfire, you should be above it!

Great story! I raced a slightly modded EVO with my slightly modded SRT at the track last Sunday, and even though I had one of my worst times of the day because I spun off the line, I still beat him with my 12.6 to his 12.8 . It gave me a nice warm and fuzzy feeling!

I think an 06 or 07, slightly modded. I don't know much else. Any sounds or looks that will help?

Yeah, he revved and launched, and then I did. Which resulted in many screams ans smacks from the woman. She's lucky we didn't crash at those speeds-haha.

It sounds like you had a lot of fun racing him lol. Now get you a CAI and beat him even worse next time!
Here is some info for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowoff_valve
Superchargers typically will have a bypass valve aka boost actuator valve and turbos a blowoff valve. The blowoff valve is audible but some types of bypass valves are audible as well.
If you go on youtube and type "blow off valve" you can see several videos of cars running them. Kids all over the place here have them on their cars, you can not drive around the block without hearing 2 or 3 of them lol.
