changing exhaust
Has anyone changed their exhaust system such as muffler. I want to change my SRT's sound to a deeper richer tone. I see people installing magnaflow mufflers but not exacting knowing what they changed out under there. I am also curious is that just a resonator and not a muffler where the twin tips come out and the muffler is actually the one that is behind that about mid body? I was told by a body shop to leave the one with the tips because its just like a magnaflow and remove the one behind it which he thinks is actually the muffler and run just straight pipes there to get a richer tone. Kind of scared doing that because I dont know what it would sound like. Any input would be appreciated!

I almost immediately removed the resonator when I got my car. The sound is subtle, yet authoritative when the throttle is opened. It's quiet when driven around town at the pace of traffic, so it doesn't sound like you're getting on it when just leaving a light.
Some have complained about drone at highway speeds. I think that's up to your tolerance, but to me it's fine on the freeway
Another alternative is to leave the resonator but get rid of the muffler. Several forum members have done this and have been satisfied with the results.
An added benefit is the ability to hear what the engine is doing. It was so quiet stock that I had a hard time discerning what RPM range I was in without looking at the tach.

With rear cats and resonator removed gave it a deeper/louder sound. I'm getting the magnaflow muffler put on next week.

Just to give you another option on exhaust choices......I went a different route. Don't think you "have" to go with magnaflow just because most do. I wasn't too happy with the magnaflow sound. I wanted a deeper growl so I chose to go with a hooker aero chamber muffler. A lot of GN guys run this muffler and it sounds great! I spent hours on youtube listening to various mufflers and decided on this one. Here are some pics of the install. 3inch stainless catback provided by BDJ (resonator removed) with a 1 in 2 out hooker aero chamber muffler. The tips are 3 inch oval borlas.

Here's mine, dual exhaust with twin magnaflow mufflers. Sounds a lot different when actually rolling and you can sustain high RPMs. Haven't had a complaint about how it sounds except for the drone in the cabin. Nothing hi-flo resonators can't fix.

Thanks guys for all your input! I think Im going to try first just removing the 25 lb resonator and have a Y flange made for it and run straight pipe to the rear muffler. I read a few like the sound, especially Mercedes SLK 32 owners and say it makes it sound like a true AMG sound! Not like a muscle car or rice burner sound, but sutle deep rumble sound. quiet rumble when idling and nice smooth power sound when opened up. Just enough to let people know I aint got no rubber band under the hood! Again thanks guys! Great forum!!

I've wanted to play with the exhaust but I wonder about the NJ emissions and inspection. Are you going to have a problem? Do you go to the state stations or pay someone to sticker it?
I was thinking of having a mid pipe made, kinda like what you can buy for a mustang, but only from infront of the rear cats back. So if you can't get away with inspections due to exhaust, you could just remove the cat less pipe, and bolt the factory one back on. Just my thought. chris

the only saving grace for me is that I know 3 people at the inspection station, if that doesn't work I have a friend that could get me one.....For a price of course!
You know what really irks me?! How can bikers with their open exhaust harleys in packs of 50 get away with that?! It doesn't make one bit of sense to me.....ugh!

it actually hurts my ears when they storm past me on the road! WTF!? Someone tell me why they don't get hassled, yet cars with slightly louder exhaust systems get hassled all the time?!
