Default Projectmayhem's Weight reduction.

Well I got the itch today to start on some weight reduction and i knew the hatch area would have a boat load of weight to lose. Scary thought i found where the gas tank sits! Next few ideas include a light weight race battery moved to the trunk, getting rid of the old giant coolant overflow resoir for a smaller one, and opening up the door panels and cleaning them out. But enough of that we want to see pictures!

Also the foam and sound insulation alone was nearly 15 lbs, the rest came out to roughly 50 lbs.

Now get on a diet and lose 20 - 30 lbs. get only a 1/4 tank of gas, don't wear your shoes, and you're set.....

Well i think if i lost any more weight i would die. I'm 6'5 and sitting around 175 so no weight loss for me. And on side i note there is no resonance inside the car from losing the sound dampening insulation, just nice increase in the roar from the exhaust. Altho my setup never had any resonance anyways.

Remove the interior door panels, consol, and passenger seat. Get rid of the air conditioner and heater equipment. Oh and don't forget to shave off all your hair.

I'll save you some time on ripping apart the door panels, not much to be saved there.

The bulk of the weight is in the padding under the carpet. I removed half the drivers side for a Sparco install and it was about 20 lbs.

If you are looking for a small coolant tank look at the CLK320 ones. They sit in the same area, but are much smaller. You can also look to go completely custom and get something like we did for the E55 build.

An Optima Red Top will save about 22 lbs and fits perfectly in the area near the vaccuum box in the trunk. Mock up a bracket it to secure it and your good.

There really isn't all that much weight to lose for free though. After you strip the basic stuff swap to some light seats and free up another 75 lbs or so. Then move onto some wheels.

I wont remove the door panels i want the interior to look stock when you sit inside it. I just meant take off the plastic panels and clean everthing up behind it the put them back on. and forget taking out the ac and heat, thats just NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. I like my cool and warm air!

A lightweight hood with a functional scoop would be awsome.

how about 17lbs sparco seats? if the stock seats are 96-98lbs combined, then switch to 34lbs for both sparcos! about a 62lbs loss. (better yet, i just read that the sparco 'EVO Z's weigh only 12.6lbs!!!)

you could also have me drive, i'm 5'7" and 135lbs! (actually, i'm temporarily in a bulking phase right now at 160) but most of the year i'm in the 130's....

anyways.... though i love all of TVT's recommendations, i hate optima batteries! i've tried them over and over again, and they always lose charge, or just crap out entirely. go with an odyssey.

better yet, put a heavy stock battery in the rear to better balance the weight of the car to 50/50.

glad to see someone really going all out for power-to-weight! please keep us posted!

Plexiglas side windows, with a piece of seat belt attached to the bottom of the windows to pull em up. Just like a 69 Hemi Dart.
Lose the spoiler, less weight, more aerodynamic, less parasitic drag. Should be OK for the drags.

Have you seen our ( B I G ) heavy volume windshield washer tank located between the passenger front fender and fenderwell? I've been trying to come up with another manufactures shorter and smaller capacity setup for this area.. Would even be better if I could relocate the reservoir. This jug is the only thing keeping me from truly venting my engine compartment thru the fender. There's nothing in your way on the drivers side. Squirrel Crusher

How the hell do you fit in this car at 6'5"!?

Do you stick your head out the window with a helmet on?

That's just fu¢king disgusting. Don't know what is worse, the fact that some guy recommended another guy shave his pubes or the thought that doing so would have a noticeable weight reduction.

Not very well thats for sure. Some times i feel like putting a giant dent in the roof where I sit. Kind of like the scene from Harry and the Hendersons when big foot pushes a big dent in the roof trying to fit in the station wagon.

Actually, long before Harry and the Hendersons, Dan Gurney used his helmet to create what is now referred to as the "Gurney Bubble" on the GT 40 Ford he was driving. (Or so the story goes).
Gurney bubble wanted - GT40s.com
Never thought about it working in a Crossfire coupe, (but then I'm only 6'2", and don't need it).
