Didn't really know where to post this but I'm looking to buy a simple star socket set that would be good for working on our cars. I dont want a crap set but I dont want a extremely expensive set either. Any suggestions?

They are called inverted torx sockets, you could get a set from Craftsman, which have the lifetime replacement, these sockets come in both chrome and impact design, Craftsman tools are so-so at least for every day wrenching, but for the weekend warriors they are OK, you could also try Craigs List, E-bay

I got a good set by Kobalt from O'reiley's Auto Parts for less than $15. It came with eight different sizes.

 

I am becoming a big fan of Harbor Freight as well. Prices are so cheap, even if you break one, replacement is cheap...haven't broken anything I have purchased there yet...btw

 

What you're looking for is an E6-E15 set. You can pick them up for $15 at O'Reilly. They come in a red shrink wrapped package. I've used them for a a few years without incident so I'd say they're a good set.

 

Thanks a lot guys. I just looked on harbor freight and I found some really cheap ones but for some reason the complete sets never include E11, weird. I might just get two of em and I'll have pretty much everything but E9. Unless we use E9 for something on our cars...?

Harbor Freight has them, but you gotta go into the store and check it out.

The closest one is near Woodbridge Mall.

 

Well thank you. I wanted to go check it out but didn't know where one was.

 

I picked up a set at Autozone for under $10. I needed one to remove the front seats. I'd say bad things about Harbor Freight tools, but most cheap sets and even Sears stuff is now made overseas.

Cheap tools are a PITA, they round the corners on nuts and bolts. I have some old wrenches and sockets that go way back and they are far far better than some of this cr@p we see these days. Even good brand names suffer from poor quality at the low end of the price scale.
I think cheap tools are not worth it, buy a good brand and look for quality they will last much longer and you will not need to replace them.
Most importantly, look after them properly and use them for the task they were meant for.

 

Yes I will have tp agree with you, after 27 years of wrenching, it is alway's better to get quality tools rather than cheaper ones, the last longer, do the job better, have a better design, but then again it really depends on the person doing the wrenching, I do own a wide range of brand named tools, not just one brand, depending on the job I'm doing, but each company will have the same basic tools and some brands offer better working styles, such as 6pt vs 12pt, how much angle, short vs stubby etc. having the correct and proper fitting tools is IMHO the best way to go.
