LantanaTX already started a thread for a turbo charged upgrade to V8 Crossfire conversion.

I can't believe that AMG stole his idea... I guess their engineers will lurk on any forum for a new idea

 

All that horsepower and still can't get to 60 MPH in under 4 secs?

That is the beauty of a vette. Only 400 HP and less than 4 secs. Much cheaper too... and in my opinion a nicer looking car.

 

two words... car weight.

The lightest of the new 2011 AMGs with the M157i motor will most likely be the CLK. The 2010 CLK63 currently has a curb weight of 3900lbs. The 2010 Corvette Z06 has a curb weight of 3200lbs. That is a significant difference in weight. There is the difference in 0-60mph right there.

700lbs curb weight equals roughly .7 in the 1/4 (all other variables equal)...as the general rule of thumb goes.

The engine will be one amazing piece of machinery. I can't wait until companies like Evosport, Kleeman, and Eurocharged can get their hands on it to start tinkering...The Z06 will just be an afterthought.

 

My apology for not saying this in my original post... but I knew it was the weight. I was just looking at the difference between the cars thinking you can just buy a normal vette with less horsepower for less money and still get a faster car.

Not sure that the Z06 will be an after thought. I have to say I drove the normal vette and it is a rocket. Handles like a dream too (handling reminded me of my Camaro)! I would have to imagine the Z06 is amazing to drive. You give me a choice between a Mercedes and a new vette and I would go straight to the vette.... I don't care how many horses are on the Mercedes.

 

Those are some tiny turbos. No wonder it puts out only 563 hp!

Could you imagine even having to do just a valve cover gasket. Probably easier to just pull the motor to allow access. Woody

563 is in the AMG non-performance package.

With the AMG Performance Pacckage it ups it to 571 and 644ft-lb.

I mean either way... ummm yes, please.


As to the whole vette to Mercedes debate. Too many corvettes on te road for my liking...but don't really run into all that many AMGs unless you drive PCH (pacific coast highway) in California every day

 

All my camaros handled better than any of my vettes, except, and this is a big except the ZO6....which is really a race ready vette....I had an old one, 03, but I like the XF better...I have less money in both my XFs than in the old vette...so, if anyone on this forum wants a vette, then they aren't die hard XF owners...there are vettes everywhere...saw an old Greenwood conversion setting a warehouse today....catching dust....have a friend giving away his project 1980 vette, 5K, any takers...they are everywhere, as are camaro, ask DJ....I will stick with what I have, but I would like one of those motors stuffed into one....lol

 

I had a 2000 Convertible camaro. Not a power house engine. But it handled very well even better than the Crossfire. I drove each car as a daily driver for over 4 years so I can tell the difference in handling and power. After 4 years of driving the Camaro I noticed the difference right away when I started driving the crossfire. I could hit a sharp turn at 60 MPH with the Camaro and the tires never made a squeak. That car was planted on the ground and I don't get the same feeling with the Crossfire. The fire is good but not as good. What the Crossfire excels in is top speed. You could do 135 and it feels much more stable than the Camaro.

I said I would pick a vette over a mercedes. I would love to buy a vette but that doesn't mean I am not a die hard crossfire fan. I had my fire for almost 5 years and refuse to get rid of it. Heck.. I may even be a bigger fan than a lot of people here. I know I have owned my fire longer than most people. I appreciate and love the car for what it is.... the same as I do for every car including the Camaro and vette. I never said I would trade it in for a vette.... but why can't someone have both? But you are correct, there are vettes and Camaros on every corner. Fires are less common and more unique.

If someone wants to buy one of these and needs a crossfire to put it into to see how to hook everything up, I'll donate mine to the experiment, as long as I get it back with the new engine.

Mercedes vs vette, definitely the Mercedes. Never really cared for the looks of a corvette. To each his own I guess.

 

With the cost of a M112K engine (SRT6/C32) being about $30-45k I could only assume that this engine would cost upwards of $60k from Mercedes.

I have been in one and drove it. Love the heads up display.... lots of fun gadgets in it to the point where it is very scary!... if I have one I would need a warranty because if that stuff breaks you are out of luck! I like the previous body style better with the pop up headlights. Just my opinion.

But they are very common cars. All over the place. Still love the crossfire and won't give it up.

That's why I'm going to let someone else buy it and then they can use my car to put it in! I think it sounds like a good deal. :P

 

The most cost effective route is still the s/c v8 from a e55/sl55 IMO.

This will be the "in thing" in a few years. If i hold on to this car a while its inevitable, it will happen.
