Micky Mouse Differential
Hi New To This Forum. But No Stranger To Drag Racing. Started At Pocono Drag Lodge Back In 1968. Ran At Island Dragway In Great Meadows Nj. Till Uncle Sam Called. Had A 63 421 Super Duty Catalina. Now That Car Had A Strong Rear, Broke A Lot Of Drive Train Parts. But Never The 456. Last April, gave Myself A Blue Srt6 Roadster With 17,000 On Her. Snappy Little Beast! Heard Clunk In Rear After About 300 Miles. Pulled Oil Plug And Insert Magnet Out Comes Chunk Of Spider. I've Been Turning Wrenches My Entire Life.
I Am Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor For 300+ Diesel Fleet In Mt Pocono Pa. My Parts Man Found A Rear In Texas Bone Yard, Cost $600 To My Door. Basic Install Exept For Buying Dubble Square Socket Sets. Pulled Old Rear Apart. Spiders Blown! Lash Is Set With Carrier Shims And Pinion Crush Torque Collar. Rear Looks Skimpy To Me, But I Look At Big Stuff Every Day. Ps.there Are A Bunch Of Guys On This Forum That Know What There Doing! (woody, oledoc Etc ) Im A Little Slow With Forums Just Dont Have The Time. But Willing To Answer Questions . Be Patient With Me.

Looks like repeated lunches at the dragstrip is demanding a heavy toll on our drivetrains.
It's all part of racing - spend every evening to get the car ready for 15 minutes of glory at the track - or about 60 seconds if you get in 5 runs at the drags...

DAMN I thought these cars were bullet proof. Would the diff be covered under maxicare warranty? Been thinking about getting another SRT but would hate to have to pay for a new diff.
nice write up...and being a shop mgr....you see what people can do to rear ends everyday....no one has found a way to reprogram the ecu to recognize a higher gear...I was thinking 3.73 myself...but no one makes that gear for our cars...3.27 is possible as Jim tried this...there was a 3.43 I believe out there too, but again no way to reprogram...so, blue bullet...what do you think, is a heat treated flaw in the metal, or it spinning the wheels on wet payment and then hitting dry payment....or something like that...
DOC: I THINK THE REAR IS STRONG ENOUGH, FOR A HIGH END SPORTS CAR. BUT DRAGRACING HAS ALWAYS BEEN HARD ON AXELS AND REARS ETC. SPIDERS ON
OPEN REARS ARE SHIFTING TORQUE BACK AND FORTH, MORE SO ON BURNOUTS WHEN
THE CAR (LIKE THE 3 STOOGES SAY IT’S ON A BIANNKNEE! ) NOT STRAIGHT TO YOU
YOUNGER GUYS. PUTTING SOME KIND OF LOCKING DEVICE LIKE A LSD OR PHANTOM
WILL HELP GREATLEY. SOME ONE SUGGESTED A 9” FORD THE STANDARD THESE DAYS ON THE STRIP. ANYTHING CAN BE DONE. BUT IT WOULD MAKE THE CAR USELESS FOR ANYTHING BUT A STRAIGHT LINE.
THE RATIO THING. OK 3.27 IN SRT6 TCUvs ECU CONFLICTING INFORMATION OR IS THERE WHEEL SPEED SENSORS SENDING INFO VIA STABILIZER? IF THE TCU IS IN CHARGE ITS RECEIVING INFO FROM SOME WHERE, OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR IN TRANS ? OR WHEES.
THE TRUTH IS DON’T KNOW HOW IT ALL WORKS YET. I HAVE ABOUT 36 UNITS WITH MERCEDES MB 900 ENGINES IN THEM. THE FACTORY HAS UPGRADED THE SOFTWARE
FOR THEM TWICE. I HAVE NO PROBLEMES WITH THE CATS OR CORN BINDERS. BUT HAVE A LOT OF CONTACTS WITH BENZ.. JUST HAVENT HAD TIME YET. ONE OF MY TECHS, HIS SON HAS A C43 AMG AND TORTUERS THE REAR TIRES AND ITS STILL TOGETHER DON’T KNOW WHAT REAR THAT HAS IN IT BUTITS STRONG. SAW JOE AMATO THIS YEAR AT POCONO DRAG LODGE REUNION HE SAID THE XFIRE WAS COOL. POCONO DRAGLODGE IS WHERE IT STARTED FOR HIM. PS READ SOME OF THE FORUMS HERE I LIKE YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR. AND THERE IS LIFE AFTER TRUCKS! TAKE FROM AN OLD CAR HAULER.

the info is the speed into the tranny and the speed out of the tranny has to be within a % of total or you go into limp mode,, what i did was ,,i installed 205 55 16 tires and wheels 24.88 tall (stock is 26.03) on my car the car ran great it would spin AUTO,, 1 geat to 6200 2 gear to 6200 and i let off at 5600 in 3 gear,,, also at 80 mph i nail it and it starts spinning ,going sideways i had to let off, that is why i put the 327 ininto my car the numbers say it would work. but it did not. with the 327 i ran the stock wheels and tires only. jim

Well, welcome aboard....just like the big rigs, you will pour money into these little beauties looking for more speed and quickness. I may limit my burnouts from now on, may even stay with stock tire set up. I launched hard the last time I ran the roadster, and heard a distinct pop in the rear end, and hope it was just suspension noise.....now, it has me worried a little...car has driven fine since, but you never know...lol
I am glad Jim chimed in about his rear end experience as well...
And the life after trucking, that's why all the xf's. I went from Chevy muscle to these little beauties...lol I love them....but like everything else I have owned, the need for more speed bit me again...they are pretty good just stock...but then again.......lol.....boys and their toys....check out the Dragon get together. I will be down the 1st week in October, won't make the spring meet....hope to see you there....or, come to the big show in St. Louis in June....not a big trip for an old car hauler....

OK, Doc. You're gonna have to translate from 'ol trucker' into "young punk' for me.
WTF is a spider and why was it in his differential? Is he talking about the ring gear, the side gear or the pinion gears? Or something else?

they arent.

people call them pinions, but they arent, by definition.
1. Ring Gear
2. Spider Gears
3. Input Shaft / Pinion Flange
4. Pinion Gear
5. Output Shaft
6. Side Gears
7. Output Shaft
