Default Not a kill...but just for funsies :)

So I went down to the local 1/8 mile track for one of my last weekends of racing (until Wavetrac time)...and in pulls a 2010 GT-R. Now normally in my experience, the owners of these cars have been some very nice, knowledgeable, approachable people. This one however, wasn't. (Such a shame because it was pearl white, my favorite color). You'd figure he was a vette owner.

On to the story! Everyone wanted to see what this GT-R had, and it delivered, 7.77 two times in a row, (for reference for DA purposes, my SRT with a 178 pulley and NW dual CAI, no tune run's 8.45's out there on a decent no burnout launch). This guy was very upset that he was not even a "whole second faster" A second is a pretty good stomping in my opinion but whatever....anywho, long story short, GT-R turns off his launch control, tries to do a burnout, and get's a 7.6 something. For the low, low cost of:

Destroyed tranny, with VDC off : $30k
Burnt clutch: at least a couple grand
No more warranty

While I still pulled an 8.4. Needless to say, he was not a happy guy.

So what have we learned?

- GT-R's are fast, but if modded we can play with them, and if heavily modded we can win.
- Don't assume the way someone will act by the type of car they drive (The Vette thing was a joke)
- If the factory says "SERIOUSLY, NEVER, EVER, EVER DO THIS"....don't do it unless you know WHY you're doing it.

I'll try to dig up a video i have of it destroying some prostock car.

7.7 is an 11 second car. Or VERY close to it. Yea there are plenty of owners who have turned vdc off have raped their transmissions. (even though nissan get their advertised 0-60 time with vdc off). There are countless threads on this. Some funny videos too. Sucks *** to have a car of that caliber break down at the strip.

the gtr is famous for its "glass" transmission lol.

I would have loved to race him, I am up about 40+whp since my last run in my sig.

And Nissan is known for refusing to cover them.

I know, I work there.

I hear people get butt-hurt about it all the time. And the price of a replacement? Just sell the car. Trust me.

Interesting........I googled this issue and found:

Nissan 2009 GT-R Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) Transmission Class Action Lawsuit Settlement | ClassActionLawsuitsInTheNews

So Nissan will only honor a trans warranty claim if you had the VDC off while attempting to get out of mud or snow, yet all of their performance claims are based on having the VDC in the off mode. That's pretty sh*tty.

My heart is breaking that the rude dude's $80k Datsun busted the tranny. Oh well.

Sneaky marketing, and terrible customer representation.

It's why I DON'T drive a Nissan.

They pay me, I pay Chrysler.

Haha, I love how people that work for car companies almost always drive another company's car. Same with insurance, they always use another company.

Never makes me confident to buy from anyone.

That sucks for the guy though. When it's a real friendly guy, you really feel bad. When it happens to a jerk, you don't feel quite so bad...

I have to question how a supposed *supercar* has such a weak link in the drivetrain. The transmission in most all high-performance cars is usually beefed up to handle any torque from the engine. WTF? Did Nissan farm this out to some non-race- or non-high-performance-experienced contractor?

I'm fairly sure that what they were more concerned with was out of the box "autocross style" performance. Which means super smooth, short throw, effortlessly quick shifts. This however can also make a transmission weaker, rather than beefing it up, they put a granny mode on it.

I have ran a GT-R several times at my 1/4 mile track. The guy and his father are both nice enough guys, but the fastest they have ever run at the track is 11.97. That was the same day I ran 12.22. Needless to say, they were not very happy to just beat me by 2/10's. The other times I have ran him were with similar results. For the price of his GT-R, I could afford to buy 4 SRT's and have him beat each and every one by 2/10's. Guess who would be happier on the way home.

Oh, and I always have more people wanting to check my car out than his.

I think if you get the other guy to destroy his car, that counts as a kill.
