Default Help - soon to be owner

Hello,

I am going to be buying an SRT-6 next week and wanted to know what I should look for - other than the obvious when looking at a used car. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It has very low miles and has been stored in a heated storage shed in the winter. Also, what is a good price assuming everything is in working order.

Thanks in advance!

Get the last five digits of the Vin and see if it has been owned by a forum member. If it has read up on their posts. If the power drops off then the ic pump may be faulty but otherwise look for brake wear, abnormal fluid smells ect. The for sale section can show you what the market is for the SRT but may be a little more inflated if the owners car care behaviors are well known or the car sold with mods.

Good luck with the purchase and welcome to the family.

Jason

Thank you for the info Jason! And thanks for the welcome. I really appreciate any opinions about the car. I have only seen regular Crossfires up close so I am buying sight unseen - it is a fly and drive.

If anybody else has ideas of other things I should look for please respond.

Cheers!

abnormal fluid smells would be from the passenger peeing their pants the first time you push the throttle to the floor....good luck with the buy....15K....is the line...up to you whether you steal it under 15k, or like enough to go over 15k....

Welcome and good luck. Great cars and I love it more than when I first bought mine.

As far as price -- depends on a number of factors -- like where the car is, mileage, number of owners, maintenance papers, forum member or not, etc. Lot's on the SRT6 section to look for info and pricing. As noted below, $15K may be the mid point but many variables could take it north or south of there --- including color.

Personally, I went for a NA instead of an SRT6 for a couple reason (even though I'd like to have one of both -- The IC pump is an item that would likely be an expensive repair (if I had one I'd use it), I'm not a fan of the spoiler (although it has grown on me a little more than at first), and the suspension is a little stiffer than the NA and I use mine to commute in DC and the roads are getting worse by the day and it can make for a harsher ride. While I'd certainly love the extra power, I don't need it and I expect I'll mod my NA to add a little more ponies, I'm very happy with it for what I use it for --- which is spirited cruising.

Good luck with your search and decision.

Pardon the ignorance but what is the IC pump? And thanks for all the responses! Mileage is approximately 6600.

It is an intercooler pump. The SRT has a know issue with them going bad. I am still using the original IC pump on mine with no problems. Anyway, it is nothing to be concerned about if you can halfway use a screwdriver and take a wheel off a car. A replacement pump that is of better quality that will not give you any future issues would cost around $150 if needed. No big deal.

Check to see if the battery is still the OEM original. It will be a white battery if original. Even with the low mileage, it needs to be replaced if original. These cars are very dependable for the most part. most any issue that comes up can be resolved by the fine members of this forum. The SRT was built on the SLK32 AMG platform, so it is a tested and true platform. You will enjoy it immensely. There is no other car that you can buy in this price range that gives you so much bang for the buck. Good luck with the purchase.

In short, it is coolant pump. It helps keep everything (Intercooler/Supercharger) from overheating. When the pump fails the the car stills drives, although not very quickly, the supercharger acts more like a hindrance than a helper. It is not as bad as you might be thinking; mine died @ 30,000 miles and it cost less than $400 (parts and labor) to replace. I wouldn't imagine you'd have much to worry about with only 6600 mi. It is a fantastic car and you won't see many, if any, more of them on the road so enjoy the attention.

The IC pump is currently $129 from NeedsWings (One of our premier vendors).

Thank you to all who have responded. I really look forward to being a member of this great forum and driving such an awesome car. It will be our (my wife and I are sharing it) first sports car ever. I am just busting to drive it.

Cheers to all!

Go to SRT6 home page. Look for SRT6 serial number threat. Open thread and there is a PDF file with all serial numbers of known SRT6's. I believe if there is a name next to it, they are a member.

Welcome Austin you will not be disapointed with the SRT 6. I am sure you know they are rare cars. 2016 coupes and 928 roadsters in the world. Doc and I suggest you get one of each.

Doc you cracked me up with that abnormal fluid smell comment. After running with you at the Dragon many times I would not doubt that that may have happened in your roadster ( more than once) LOL.

Thank you all for the great responses! I am very pleased that I found this forum and cannot wait to pick up the car. As soon as I get it home I will post pictures and give more details on the car. I don't think my wife realized what she started when she mentioned she wanted a Crossfire. Of course once I found out about the SRT-6 it was all over!

Cheers to all!

Hello All,

I just got back to Austin, Texas a couple of hours ago and now have a dark gray metallic Crossfire SRT-6. Not sure what the official name for the color is. I am amazed at the power this beauty has. When I picked it up in Wisconsin it had 6571miles on it. Now it has 7899miles. I am very eager to get her licensed and inspected. We (I talked my wife into coming along for the trip) made the entire trip with no plates on the car!

Can someone tell me the proper name for the color and the interior looks kind of platinum.

I plan on taking pictures of the car tomorrow and posting them.

Cheers!

Tristan

Graphite if its a 2005 SRT6, don't forget to add it to the Serial Number thread and welcome aboard....
