obd ii not communicating
went for emissions test today. was told by inspector that the obd ii was not communicating with their system.... just purchased car... battery was low and had to be boosted off.....however it was driven over 500 miles prior to emissions test....(florida to tennessee). how long before all sensors would be reset and communicating as they should be?

Re: obd ii not communicating
It is not just miles---The ECM must see different speeds, acceleration, deceleration, cold start, hot start, open and close loop, etc---several drive cycles, but that trip with on and off the interstate should have done it. The battery would not have the monitors to clear---You may have had a code cleared---Good luck, Jimmy

Re: obd ii not communicating
The OP was told that "the obd ii was not communicating with their system". Not that there was a code or some system not ready.....
OP, since your OBD II reader works fine.... did they give you any other info other than the OBD II wasn't communicating???? Are they getting no data at all from the OBD II port??

Re: obd ii not communicating
Interesting to see this thread pop up......
I just went for emissions testing on Wednesday and they said two of my monitors were not providing info to there device while testing.
As a result of this I got a "rejected" on my test.
Then just for the hell of it I went back on Friday and pulled into a different test lane and they ran it again and everything checked out perfectly. "PASSED"
I have no idea what had happened but all is well

Re: obd ii not communicating
i do not know what an ECU tune is to answer your question... sorry on that.
also i was watching the screen at the emissions testing center and that was the message displayed.....sensors not commuicating....rejected...
the obd ii i used was about an hour later when i got back home.....several miles and stops later......
question: if it is communicating with my tester does that mean it will communicate with the emissions station tester or are they looking for different data?
thanks for the help...

Re: obd ii not communicating
not communicating means the tester isnt reading what its supposed to. ie: o2 sensors. o2 heaters ect. this is usually remidied by a drive cycle. a series of specific speed bringing the car to a stop then going again. once the drive cycle is complete the car can be tested. the drive you had coming to tn should have done that.
a tune is when a compny goes into the ecu and retunes the computer for more performance. at one time the o2 sensors were turned off to inc. power. this would result in a testor not being able to read the sensors and result in a fail.
emissions testing not communicating and obdII testors have nothing in common so while 1 may not communicate the other can. ie: the emission testor can read a fault code but the auto zone testor cant read the O2 sensors are turned off.
your failed sheet should have the parameters that couldnt be read. post those

Re: obd ii not communicating
try this before spending any cash.
unplug the battery for about an hour. then on a sunday morning (least amount of traffic ) starting with a cold car do a drive cycle. sometimes you have to do this a few times for it to complete. remember the car has to be cold every time you do a drive cycle
OBD II Drive Cycle (reset car diagnostic monitors )
if thisn doesnt work its time for a shop with star das to look at it.
are you in tn? what part?

Re: obd ii not communicating
the car has been thru several drive cycles....about 600 miles....from florida to tenn. then around town, next day to chattanooga to get emissions test. at least one cold cycle since the car was not cold when boosted off to leave florida......had been test driving prior to that......

Re: obd ii not communicating
the mileage isnt as important as the time and speed the drive cycle does. it sets the parameters for the testing station to read. it has to be done in the specific pattern the link says to.
i dont know of a shop close to you i can recommend but buckhead imports in atl can read any issues with star das software. if you post the vin im sure the database here can tell you if its a forum car and any mods it may have
sorry i couldnt be more help

Re: obd ii not communicating
battery starts car ok......will replace shortly but would like to get emissions test done before swapping so as to not clear all the sensors again...... just wondering how many cycles the sec air needs before it restets and the evap system reset time.....
thanks for all the suggestions thus far......
