Default Going from '05 GTO to SRT-6...questions

Hey guys just wanted to say whats up! I'm new to the forum and so far it's been great, a lot of useful information here and some really nice cars. Ok so right now I have an 05 GTO and am soon to be getting a 05 SRT6 as soon as I find one in my area (Houston). I've done a lot of research but there are still some questions I have that I'm having trouble finding answers so if you guys could help me out I'd really appreciate it!

1) As far as acceleration goes, will the SRT be a downgrade from my current GTO? I'm hoping it will at least be as fast and feel really quick.

2) How are the transmissions in these things? Are they pretty strong and able to handle added power if I decide to do basic bolt-ons? Also, what are the shifts like under WOT? I'm hoping theyre somewhat firm, crisp shifts that put you back in your seat.

Thanks guys!

Don't know what the outcome stock to stock would be, but with a few mods on the SRT6, I'm pretty sure that you'd be happy. I used to have an 02 manual C5 (LS1), and the '6' (modded) is definitely quicker

Depends on the GTO. I beat several at the strip when stock but most were the 5.7. The SRT automatic transmission is a bit slow to change. Lot's of things happen during the shifts. Timing is pulled, the throttle body partially closes and the supercharger disengages. So needless to say, softish. The transmission is strong. Keep the fluid (correct fluid) at the correct level and it can really take a beating with no negative effects.

Hey Les thanks for the reply, my GTO is 6.0L. I plan on modding my SRT-6 but I just hope it's just as fast as my gto as soon as I get it. And these cars have torgue management I guess? Does anyone tune the TCU in these cars to make them shift firmer and get rid of the pulled timing? Can this transmission handle that abuse?

The 2 companies that I know of that modify the TCU parameters are Eurocharged and Speedriven. The transmission is basically the same one in the E55 AMG so it can handle over 500 hp and 500 torque, being conservative. The SRT-8 also has the same basic transmission and they are also bullet proof until over 500/500.

Look in the private cars for sale area. There were some good ones in there just too far for me to travel.

Not going to shift like the goat. MB likes their cars to be smooth, so not firm shifts, but are not all that delayed either. Modded, it will take you 6.0 without a doubt. Done it too many times to modded goats out there. Now get into heavily modded small blocks, they will come get you at the end of the 1/4. CAI, pulley and a tune will net you mid 12's on street tires. Go a little further and you are in the high 11's. The car's real threat is the launch. You will able to jump on most cars in your class. Meaning Mustangs, Camaro's, etc... They have to mod theirs to run you down. We are woking on that last 1000' to stay ahead of them...we shall see.... Good luck. I looked at the goat when they came out, just didn't like the manual shift in the car...never drove the auto, but have owned a lot of Camaros and Vettes in my day...I will keep the XF's....lol

Ok yea I know these cars react very well to just little mods, but stock for stock will it be as fast as the gto? And does anyone ever do exhaust mods to these cars? Sounds like it's all pulley's and tunes. Wondering if headers or getting rid of the cats gives you good results.

No one has shown me exhaust or headers help at all...not yet anyway. Stock, the best time I did in an SRT6 coupe was 13.1.... IF you can beat that stock, then you are faster... Back to the exhaust. Many have done different mods to their exhaust to get that European sound...That is a personal thing. I just have not done anything yet...just haven't found the right set up and sound I like...

Ok that's fine, I kind of want to keep this one quiet anyways. And 13.1 is about the absolute best a gto can do. What was ur trap speed stock?

I did tha t in another forum members car. I never ran mine stock to get a basis. I am sure Matt will chime in if he reads this thread. I am sure the 60' was in the 2-2.2 area...I am guessing in the 110mph area...I can give you modded speeds...with the pulley and tune...

181 single cai tune and drag radials and your looking at 11.9 @ 115 mph consistent

A single CAI, pulley, and tune....1st time down the track 60' was 1.9, 1/8 was 8.2, 1/8 mph was 86, 1/4 12.7 at 109 mph...
A dual CAI, same pulley and re-tune 60' was 1.8, 1/8 was 8.0, at 87mph, 1/4 was 12.43 at 111.6 mph.... and the times keep coming down the more you mod...I have since added new intake mani's and few other tweaks to get the roadster to the 12 flat area...the coupe is getting even more mods to break into the 11's...

Wow! That's incredible! What about an intercooler upgrade? Do these cars respond well to that?

These times are very impressive for sure. Another quick question, how well can u hear the supercharger on a stock srt?

With the stock setup, you will hear it a little bit. If you upgrade to the single or dual CAI, it's a whole other world. When I put my single intake on about a year ago, I thought something was wrong with the motor. It was just the lovely music of the supercharger kicking in.

Just put a CAI on it and see(and hear) what she does first. Look at the signature below, and that should give you an idea. On busted stock sized Nankang street tires(they howled) to boot.

Don't forget that these are hand assembled motors, too. They don't all act the same. Must have gotten a strong one.....

Wow! Your times are so impressive for just an intake! And yea these engine do vary but it can't be more than say 15 whp. I might have underestimated this car a bit, I think it can easily keep up with my gto stock and as soon as modding starts, it's all srt!
