As you can tell by my massive number of posts, I'm new here.

I am looking at a 2005 Blue SRT one-owner Coupe with an automatic (all SRT's?) and 39,000 miles. It has been meticulously maintained, never driven in rain (except when caught in it), has sat in a climate controlled garage through the winters, and had oil changes every 9000 miles with Red Line and has no known issues.

What would you say a fair price for this car?

I've read though the forums and know to look for the rust on the bottom edge of the door, check the seat heaters, key/column lock and listen for any odd noises from the rear do to drive shaft alignment... are there any SRT(AMG) specific issues I should look for? Other issues I may have not seen in the forums? Also, do the insurance companies punish the SRT heavily over the limited models (50-ish, married, no kids)?

Is an SRT more or less dependable than the base/non supercharged 6 drive train? I know it is 100 HP more fun , but I'm still not sure which direction I'll go, a limited coupe or an SRT.... I have and love (high) performance cars, but this one will be our daily driver..... should I be afraid of parts availability/costs?

I also found a 2004 Coupe locally with only 3500 miles for $15K, saw another '04 coupe on e-bay with 7300 miles for $14K and an '05 limited coupe with 25K miles offered for $12.5K Is it worth the extra $$'s to get a basically new car? I am seeing '04 coupes with low miles for around 10K.

I own the SLK32 AMG (the twin of the SRT6) and all I can say is, you won't be disappointed with the SRT6. Buy and don't look back (except to see the other cars you are leaving in the dust). I use mine as a "nearly" daily driver and love it.

Pricing? Depending upon some of the issues you may find, I would expect to pay around $16K give or take, plus or minus regional differences. YMMV

Most all parts are readily available, though some are not especially cheap. However, most wear items are reasonable.

The things I would look for, in no particular order:

Intercooler pump (replace or upgraded?)
Supercharger pulley bearing (wear item)
Idler pulley bearing (wear item - consider replacing with Pulley Saver Kit)
K40 relay (check link below)
Oil and/or coolant in supercharger inlet (coolant may indicate intercooler leak)
Leaky valve cover/breather gaskets/seals (not an expensive fix)
Over/under torqued valve cover bolts (under, see above / over, warped covers or stripped threads?)
Leaky transmission TCU connector (another common problem/cheap fix)

mechanical parts are fine, but SRT6 body parts can be expensive.

Thanks for the answers so far! I'm feeling more secure about going the SRT route. Nothing I saw in the potential issues is outside of my wrenching abilities.

I was thinking the price of the Crossfire SRT I am looking at was pretty fair until I saw the exact same color 1600 mile car sold for $15,000... now $14,500 is seeming.... well..... never mind. It's all about timing, right? The funny thing is we are heading to San Diego on Tuesday... if they had the car on Craigslist instead of Ebay..... we'd have seen it.

$15k for that one beauty was a steal. I think a fair price may be between $14-$16k or so. I have owned four Crossfires over the past five years and finally settled with my SRT-6. I am not disappointed. Save some cash for upgrades. The stock power is nice, but I am glad that I spent on the money on a DCAI, tune, and supercharger pulley.

 

If you can get get your hands on an SRT roadster, DO IT!!! If I could, I would love to get one to match the coupe. Or maybe Kim will let me swap the drivetrain in her yellow roadster after the warranty runs out. That would be the cat's pajamas!!! You can find reasonable mileage cars from $11-15K, and every once in a while a gem like the one you just missed. Feel better knowing another newbie forum member got that one. And yes, I'm jealous of him too!

 

I agree with most everyone that has responded . . . Buy an SRT6 (and preferably a roadster). These great cars are a super bargain in the marketplace so buy the best you can find. One thing to note is that the coupes have a couple of inches LESS headroom than the roadsters. If you're going to buy a coupe make sure that will not be an issue for you. Good luck finding a great Crossfire and ENJOY . . .

 

I once read an article that changed the way I buy cars. It was called "Look, Honey, I Bought the Bottom of the Line!" If you are seriously looking at logging a lot of miles on your Crossfire, get the SRT6 and do not look back. I bought an N/A coupe first -- the only thing I miss is the stick shift. Then I went straight to SRT6 roadster and could not be happier.

There is no insurance punishment, it insures like a normal passenger car. If you suffer a great deal of body damage, it will be totaled.

If you are serious about putting power to the wheels, you will need an LSD first. Without it there is little point upgrading the power, you have more than the car can handle stock.

 

A LSD isn't exactly necessary unless you track the car....and launch it all the time. Neal(MIMI05SRT) has over 500 passes at the strip with a stock rear end. I'd rather spend the $1,500 on engine mods, but that's just me I guess.

 

I have owned both a na and srt6. Get the set for sure I love my convertible. I over paid compared to todays prices but would do it again.

 

Once you become addicted to XFs, there is no going back. I wanted a roadster with a stick, so I bought it new. Two years later, my wife found the SRT6 in Chicago so I bought it in the middle of January and had it driven/delivered to Michigan in a blizzard. Every once in a while she shows me a graphite SRT6 roadster for sale and it would have been mine if I had a 2' longer garage (then I could fit 4 in, nose to tail). But...I can fit 3 in there if I put the first one sideways against the back wall. So no excuses for not owning an SRT6 roadster.

 

Larskeller has a blk coupe srt6. 13,500 in GA.
