Default Steering went out on the highway. Wtf??

Grrrr... More problems with my new to me srt6. Fortunately right before I take it to the tune shop on Monday to get my intake, sl55 fuel pump, and wideband kit installed.

Driving on the highway tonight and pushed it a little. All of a sudden the steering completely tightened up and the battery light came on. A couple miles later the bas esp light came on. I turned the car off and turned it back on in the gym parking lot and the bas light was off but I didnt drive it home yet. The power steering is definately out though.

Ill pull codes in the morning. Any thoughts in the meantime?

Thanks,

Dan

Did you check the serpentine belt? Sounds like either that or your alternator. Been there.

Could be the 185. Having the shop optimize the tune with the wideband kit so theyll check that out too. No more wot for me. 😳 One other think there is a slow coolant leak somewhere. Im having the tune shop check it out too. Pretty positive it isnt a head gasket. Just wondering if it could be related...

Better hope it's not an intercooler leak. That's an expensive fix. But not related to your other issue.

$1,100-1,500 for the IC. At least 6 hours labor. I already did it once with ThumperSRT when we found his was leaking.

Crap... Would it be better to just get a new intercooler or would that not cut it, if thats the issue? And how does the serpentine belt effect the power steering? Btw thanks for all your help on this.

Better find out where the leak is first. No sense spending extra $$$ if you don't have to. Easiest way to check if it's the IC is to remove the Y-pipe and look for residue. If there's no slime all over everything, you're okay. If you see slime, get the wallet ready.

As for the belt, it runs every accessory. If it breaks/pops off, you lose everything but engine power. Been there too!

Yup! Belt popped off. Still in tact. Can it be retied or is it time for a new one?

There must be a reason it popped off. Double check all of your pulleys and order a new belt. I wouldn't trust the one that slipped. But if it's not frayed or cracked, it might get you home in a bind.

Looks like you have a larger crank pulley from that pic. You'll have to contact Rob at NeedsWings to make sure you get the right size belt. I wonder if that's a 185mm crank pulley?

Agreed, I've been there too. I had a hairline crack at the coolant plastic tee fitting returning to the coolant tank. It only spit when I ran real hard (autoX). At WOT,off,WOT, and with a little hot coolant on the belt; PRESTO, belt slipped/jumped off. I replaced with barbed brass tee. As Chuck mentioned; find your leak and fix. And yeah, order the proper belt from Rob @ N.W.'s. And depending on the mileage, you may need a new belt tensioner perhaps?

Tow truck just dropped it off at the tune shop. Guy there took a look and mentioned a new belt tensioner. Also the belt is a 185 eurocharged. Or rather was. Now its a scored belt. Will need a new one.

In addition to the wetness, it also looks like AGE related cracks on the belt.

Looks like it's been leaking awhile, a lot surface rust on your idler pulley just above the water pump pulley.

Crap. Thanks guys. I may have dodged a bullet here. What is the average life span in miles of a serpentine belt and does the size effect it?
