How to deal with oxidizing engine?
I do not think that there is a practical way to remove this oxide with any liquid or paste cleaner. Oxidation like this is removed with the careful use of fine abrasives and the cleaned surface is coated with a protectant. You can achieve the finish you want from matte (easiest) to shiny depending on your time commitment. Or you could just leave it after a quick rub down with fine wet and dry paper.
This oxidation actually protects the surface by shielding it from oxygen. Anodizing is the process of evenly oxidizing aluminum etc and dying the surface oxides.
To oxidize like this the car must have sat in a damp environment for some time, maybe a dealers lot. My block is almost the same and I expect there are many like it.

Step 1: purchase 1 box of generic brillo pads with soap for $2.
Step 2: dip in water, spend 1 to 2 minutes scrubbing intake manifolds
Step 3: rinse

Looks really great. Do you put any protection on it?
cross hair, I would stay away from wire wool as it leaves pieces behind that rust and stain.

I like the results from the brillo pads. Does the soap really make a difference -- the issue (I think) is oxidation and not dirt/oil? Second question -- did you use any high heat clear paint to seal it and prevent the oxidation from recurring?
I'm going to give this a try later in the spring. If I get the valve covers clean and shiney, I may just have to paint the SRT6 in contrasting black before I seal them.
