Default cleaning the engine

What is a good spray or cleaner to use before hosing down the engine. Any thoughts of a good product(s) here? My engine is starting to get dusty.

Sorry I was so short with my answer-you were the 4th person to ask that in the last week.

50% strength on the Simple Green dilution.

Is simple green a grease remover? Will it remove road dust and tar?

It will remove everything you want it to. It is quite effective.

Yes, it is a de-greaser.

Or 50/50 water and 'Greased Lightning'
Been using that for about 10 years.

DO NOT USE FULL STRENGTH - IT WILL DISCOLOR PLASTIC.

Don't leave it on more than 2-3 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

I will make the assumption you want to do this while the engine is in the vehicle. This is a good idea, helps your engine cool off more efficiently and you will get better gas mileage and possibly a few more horsepower. First off, disconnect your battery negative terminal first then cover your alternator in plastic and tape. Make sure your alternator is completely sealed in. Use engine degreaser available at most part stores ) to spray the block and engine components. Read the instructions and warnings on the degreaser, some are bad for rubber parts ( such as fuel lines, electrical wire insulation and spark plug wire insulation ) and take the necessary precautions. Let the degreaser do it's job by waiting the prescribed length of time listed on the degreaser can. Then hose off the block. You will probably have to use some rags and elbow grease to get off all of the gunk. Dispose of the refuse in a legal manner and once your motor is completely dry, take off the cover on your alternator and reconnect your battery.for more info about auto repair for cleaning engine you can look more on the site.

Yup
50/50 mix of Simple Green and water.
Spray on cool engine and all surfaces avoiding electrical devices.
Allow to set for about 10 minutes
Rinse thoroughly with clean water and start the engine.
Drive around for awhile and heat up the engine to ensure it is dry.

Then spray all surfaces with CD-2 Engine Detailer once again avoiding belts and electrical devices.

Here is mine after this procedure

Yes almost everyday throughout the spring, summer and fall.
I have put 60,000 miles on that engine since April 2007.
I just keep up with the detailing and I like the results.

Use a leaf blower to dry off the engine. I've been using one for years. It gets all the water out of electrical connections and there is no water pooling anywhere.

On previous 4 cyl, twin cam engines water always got down into the spark plug holes. The leaf blower is perfect to clear out water like that.

Been using leaf blowers on my engines ( all of 'em, cars, trucks, lawnmowers, motorcycles, airplanes ) since 1975.
I'm on my fifth leaf blower .... ( this last one just doesn't seem to want to quit, I've had it since '97 - Lawn Boy )

I would use the same Simple Green 50/50 mix and a long brush. I did that once when I had the OEM fifter box and it worked great. Oh-my box was custom painted too! No problemo.

Simple Green at 1/1 (probably 1/5 would work) does a fantastic job on the windows of the house, that's my 2 centavos.
Beats the other stuff hands down.
