Top Tier Gasoline

OK, so the whole "Top Tier" thing was basically put together by BMW, Toyota, Honda, and GM and it's a voluntary standard for oil companies to meet. Maybe Toyota should have done the same with motor oils to avoid their sludge issues. But I digress.
A quick Google brings up many discussions about this, quite often contradictory and certainly anecdotal, inclulding this tidbit from associatedcontent.com (never heard of them before):
So Ford goes as far as recommending a specific brand while neither Chrysler, Mercedes Benz, Nissan nor apparently any of the French automakers seems to give a damn one way or the other.

Left out of the Top Tier alliance, Ford has taken the unprecedented step of recommending a specific gasoline brand. Starting with 2006 models, Ford vehicles have "Ford Recommends BP" printed on its gas cap, which apparently includes BP's Amoco brand. It is not clear if this endorsement includes the SOHIO and Arco brands, also acquired by BP. In its press release related to Ford's endorsement, BP stated that it "backs up the quality of all its fuels with a written guarantee, and is the only major integrated oil company to do so." None of the BP brands are listed as Top Tier.

Hate to burst everyone's bubble but the gas you fill your car up with, regardless of the brand, is pulled from the same storage tanks.
I work for a firm that, amongst other things, owns 22 C-stores, mostly Citgo (which we are in the process of unbranding simply because the CEO's are fed up with Chavez & his non-stop mouth & the bad PR he brings to the Citgo brand) & Mobil. All of our gas is pulled from either Green Bay or Junction City (pop. 200) & comes up to this area via one pipeline out of Chicago. Via some bizarre allocation method (of which I have no idea how it works) each "brand" is alloted volume to push their product up the line to the tanks squatting in the aforementioned locations. BUT, whether I fill up with Citgo or Mobil or BP or fill-in-the-blank it's all pulled from the same tanks.
From the way it sounds Top Tier is more of a marketing idea than an actual type of gasoline. I suppose it would work the same way any other campaign is run: "brand" something, convince manufacturers to help "sell" it by giving them publicity or actual dollars (who knows?) & voila', Top Tier gas!
By the way, gas went up 12 cents this morning around here (once again, who knows why?), $3.34 for premium.

The "why" may have something to do with oil being over $100 a barrel.

Again, huh?
I can hardly wait until summer comes along.............$4.00 a gallon, I'd bet.

Also, please define bad gas. Even between the different areas of the States, different regions have their own blends based on their environment (altitude, weather, etc etc.) These blends also change according to the seasons.
We are fortunate down here and have lots of choices I run 100 Octane Shell V Racing from the pump around A$1.70 a litre then I put 500 Mil of Nulon octane boost which gives me an average of 105octane for the track
The Powerchip ECU I had made is set for 100octane makes a huge difference runs with the SRT until around 120/130Klms then not much in it anyway. Howver the Limted is heavily modified
